Boardworks Fin Box Repair

Hit a rock yesterday and ripped the fin box right out of my Boardworks surfboard. Anybody have any experience replacing the fin box in one of these type of boards and how it differs from poly repair?

Try sending it back to the factory!

I haven’t seen the inside of a Boardworks yet. Eva Hollman (The Board Lady) is an experienced yacht designer/board repair expert. If you are anywhere near Ventura, you should look her up. Her website details some of the issues with EPS core, namely that it isn’t a very solid material to directly install boxes, plugs, etc. Here are a couple of links detailing repairs on something like what you describe…

You’re in Florida…

Take it to any windsurf shop for a lead on board repair. Just an epoxy board, need woodies and posting to deck if you run bigger than 8" fins. Normal fin box repair, US box, around $120.

Howzit Lee, $120.00 to replace a fin box, that seems quite a lot, I usually charge about $35.00. A while back I heard about a repair guy in Fla. making about $ 100,000.00 1 year doing repairs, now I can see how it could be done with prices like that. Also one of my shapers was in Austrailia and told me that Feral Dave has a drive up ding repair svc.at his shop. Aloha,Kokua

Maybe I live in Yuppieland, USA.

Even 15 years ago, surfboard finbox replacment was already in the $80 range, for poly boards.

Most sailboard repair guys charge at least $120 5 years ago, as a replacement usually meant some sort of damage involved, and it’s never a drop in replacment with epoxy styro.

And if the customer wants some sort of spoken guarantee, replacment includes woodie sides, front and back, and also some connector thru to the deck, which also gets an additional 4-6 layers of glass.

Perhaps you should include your exact location and phone #, as you’d get TONS of business if everyone know of your prices.

Howzit Lee, Maybe it's time to get back into board repair business with those kind of prices. I know I was shocked to hear about some repair guys charging $35.00 to replace 1 FCS plug where as I was only charging $15.00. Aloha,Kokua

Business 101

If you have plenty of work you are not charging enough.

yo kokua… raise your prices… i just had a friend pay $45 for 1 fcs plug… i was doing glass on fins for $45 and the shops i hear are around $60+

Howzit jip, I don't do all that much repair work these days, only build boards. The people I do do repairs for are friends and their kids, some I don't even charge, ie: the name KOKUA. When I was doing a lot of repair work I got tired of seeing all those boards in my shop and then you have the guy who brings you a real beater and thinks you can make it like new again. There is a lot of money in repairs but not a lot of satisfaction like in building new boards. A friend and I tried to give the Hanalei Surf Co team a lesson in ding repair and the response was " Just let mom and dad pay for it". Coming from an era where most all real surfers fixed their own dings I find it very disheartening to get such a response. I started doing pro ding repair over forty years ago and just don't think it's that hard so I just do it in my spare time which is very little. One thing is when I tell people the price they always throw in a nice $ tip and a big thank you which is enough for me. One that I'm doing right now is for Andy Irons dad, it's a 3 stringer Diff that Andy loaned to his girl friends brother with out permission and the kid was not up to 10-12 foot Hanalei and got caught inside and broke the board. Andy trid to hide it but his dad found it and blew a gasket, so Phil asked me if I would fix it and just charge Andy the maximum. The board is in bad shape and Andy will be paying thru the nose,it's not like he can't pay for it,I don't care if he is the current champ.Aloha, kokua

What are woodie sides ?

What is some connector thru to the deck?

Thanks,
