How’d you get Hawaii cheyne? Gonna be in your neck of the woods in a few days maybe we could catch a surf if your in town… Lemme know lokbox@sbcglobal.net
Not necissarily - in our rescue dive course we were showna neat trick - with one fin cross you legs at the ankles and dolphin kick. really comfortable and can get some good speed through waves... riff.
Then compare that with two swimfins using “dolphining” monofin technique! (Exactly what I recommend to mat surfers who are learning how to catch and glide really early on waves before they break.)
Yeah exactly!!
a lot of freedivers I hang out with use monofins… I’d love to go bodysurfing with one…
They do take a bit of getting used to though - especially treding water. Awesome fun when underwater…
Rif.
Carve , do you have any more of Clark Little’s bodysurfing shots please ?
cheers !
ben
KA-BOOM!!! Hee hee!
man , what can I say , except that is
PSYCHO !!!
thanks for coming , Clark !

…just for you , ‘smally’ …here’s the “pulled back” view [taken with my el cheapo digital camera ] , to show what eno , paz , and I have been bodysurfing , mat riding , and , when bigger, surfing on boards…
[that’s eno , pretending to be a dolphin]…
AND…
here is why ian is borrowing my 7’ single fin , matting , and bodysurfing , for the last month or two [or more, actually !!] …shallow shallow shallow banks can snap boards like toothpicks !
cheers
ben
…as someone previously stated , often you surface from a dolphin style takeoff to get a lip in the head . [why I want to pursue sideways underwater takeoffs , like the one posted of rasta previously ]
[goggles help , so you can check out where the seafloor is , in relation to your neck …lol ]
[ …this may just be my new ‘avitar’ shot , eh ?!..noice ! …]
…it’s VERY shallow there , ‘Smally’ !
…day’s end … a FUN day !
For those of you who didn’t see my Jan. 9th post, here are some bodysurfing photos from that big Wednesday in December '05. http://public.hankhh.fastmail.fm/12-21-05/
cool shots, ben. i’ve been mucking around with the down-the-line dolphin thing lately. loads of fun.
groovy nathe !
get a mate to spend $20 on a diposable watercamera and …photos please !
cheers
ben
[or maybe …footage, for your latest movie??]
i lifeguard all summer long around these parts. all i do is bodysurf and log in the summer. i have the wedge and the point and i think ive become a pretty good slider. try ditching your board for a few sessions and sliding good 6 foot peaky surf. making it out of a barrel bodysurfing is a lifechanging experience. ive been looking at people through the tube and coming out right by them and guys who rip on shortboards are blown away and start trying it. get duckfeet. vipers are trendy around here and lots swear by them but the voits are un-beatable. my friend was a viper devotee until i made him go a week with voits and he sold his vipes to a middle school kid hahahahahahaha. remember, without a board its easy to sit on the inside and take off on the good well shaped ones that others let go cause they’re scratching for the sets or to get out of the way.
learn to slide!!!
and while your at it buy a mask and a sling for a total of $50 and spearfish too, thats the perfect way to spend flat summer days. spear spear for an hour or two and come home with enough fish for a nice little bbq.
…good to hear from ya Dave , WELCOME back , mate !
get your mates out there with that video / camera , eh ?
cheers
ben
Hi Chip!
nice pictures as usual!!
but ehm…
how about these underwatershots you promised eh?
hows the computer doing?
I found this link on myspace, it’s a making-of about the Under The Sun surfmovie (by Syrus Sutton), featuring Dave Rastovich and others.
http://www.myspace.com/underthesunmovie
it has a few short segments of Dave bodysurfing, he’s SOOOOOO fluid!! Go see!
enjoy,
What a neat thread in the middle of winter! ANYWAY,
background on the lifeguards with one fin------in the middle of a resque it was one hand for the bouy and one hand for a single fin that could go on either foot—and the non-fin foot could also dig into the sandy bottom as you dove under the waves , thus keeping you going forward toward the victim. still it all took some practice and timing—many of todays younger guards tend not to put that time and practice in.
Personal choice in fins? on duty the Voit Custom and when it’s time to Play? UDT’s no contest and they are sooooo much cooler since i learned to modify them with a planer—the best fins by far for bodysurfing and using my Dale Mat uner aly conditions
how did you modify your UDTs with a planer? I just found some UDTs recently…
the UDT’s can be made a bit more user friendly by milling down the center rib --do it slowly and try the fins before and after any changes—you do both sides working from foot pocket toward the tip—in my case , all of a sudden the fins felt Great! they were good before, but now Great…i got the idea from a thread either here or on a body surfing site that i can’t remember(old age)—some guys also cut the tips of the fins straight across–i didn’t—if i can get my camera to work i’ll post some photos—just take it slow and try them between slices
Keith: found the thread!—it was back in May —use the search option—there are several comments on modify the fins—have fun!

Please take this back!!! You always take two fins on a rescue. You hold both fins in one hand and the buoy in the other. Once you hit the water you pop the buoy and let it trail behind you. Then you put a fin in each hand and high knee it until you feel it would be faster to dolphin through the surf and continue until you feel it would be faster to put on your fins and swim. Watch any rescue around here and you will see that a lot of practice goes into making it through the surfline in the most efficient way possible. You go on a rescue with one fin and ill go with two and i guarantee you i will reach the victim first every time AND be back on the beach way ahead of you already making more wet preventatives and looking for any other potential rescues.
The only time it’s more convenient for me to wear one fin is if it is really sandy shore break and wearing only one fin means fin sores on only one foot. Even then if there is any size it is necessary to wear two fins just to get the propulsion needed to get into the waves early enough to get a good slide going. Look at wedge guys or mark cunningham or mike stewart, all of them experienced and skilled bodysurfers but i’ve never seen them use one fin. Bodysurfing with one fin would be like taking the side fins off your thruster, you could do it but it’s not the best scenario.
You know I don’t think I’ve ever seen any clubbies over here using fins to do swim out rescues, of course they might - just haven’t seen it.
