Bolted Mark Richards Boards

What the hell is going on with these Mark Richards boards being bolted to the walls?? Back in the early 80’s in Virginia Beach there was a McDonalds’ that had a brand new MR board bolted to the wall…???  Many of us would eat under this gem dreaming of surfing it and wondering why the hell it was bolted to the wall. Needless to say it became part of fabled Va. Beach surf history when it was stolen off the wall never to be seen again. I have always wondered what happened to that board and was reminded of this classic story in my sleepy ski/lake town in the mountains of Western Maryland this week. I was showing real estate to a family the other day in this huge ski rental property when I round the corner to the downstairs bedroom and run face to face with a MR board bolted to the wall..???? What the hell?? It looks to be a 6’6” single fin with thick 70’s down rails. Looks like the nose rocker was about 4” and the tail 2”. It has major heel prints in the deck and the nose has had a shhmeeg repair attempt. I frothed over the board for about 30 minutes and snapped a few pics of the board. I tried to get a pic of the information on the stringer but it is hard to read. I get GL 8070 6’6” sl……r…..  ???I am going to try to pursue buying this board and restoring it from the owner if I can get them to buy the house. Any thoughts on the age, value, and why the hell people bolt these MR’s boards to the wall????

Here are a few pics.

That’s pathetic. Especially with the goddam leash on it.

I recently brokered a deal in selling a mint condition '60s popout to some rich folks who are learning how to surf. They wanted a “classic” longboard to decorate their pool house. They paid $2000 for a mid 60s popout, and I got half for my efforts. Suckers.

These clowns who affix old boards to walls of homes and bars should use replicas or popouts. I’ve seen too many nice boards suffer the ignominy of becoming ‘decor’.

I don't get why its bolted. Its not that hard to put racks up!, at least if you wanted to, you could ride the thing again.

That's just cruel, I feel ill looking at it.

disgusting.  steal it if you have to.  let it be free.  I’ll help you.  we are going to need a cresent wrench.  and we will leave a very nasty note.  I have a 10 yr MR fish that he shaped for me and I cherish it.

F the crescent wrench! Ya need an 18v cordless drill with the right size nut driver. Looks like 8 or 10mm, to me. I’d have that thing off the wall in 30 seconds.

  1. seriously! with the fkn leash…jesus.

  2. excellent use of ignominy.

I’m a wall bolter. i find these old beat up boards and paint em to look like wood. They look good hanging on the wall or standing in the corner. I call it “recycling”. Fancy ass interior designers like them a lot. Before you hammer me bear in mind I am only using generic thrusters that are beyond redemption as surfcraft.

any excuse is a good excuse to buy a ski mask!

  1. excellent use of ignominy.

I had to look that up. dead on.

ha ha ha, i'm glad you said it Greg...

i was going to add to my post that Afoaf is constantly making me pull out the dictionary but, on second thought, i didn't want to look dumb... maybe everyone except me knows what ignominy means??? ha ha ha, i guess not... at least i'm in good company. =)

SammyA..Pathetic is right! The strange thing is that the owners are not even collectors..? This is a ski rental that sees new traffic ever week year round. This area is 200 miles from the ocean ta-boot. I can't believe that it has not been stolen already. My buyers were going to buy this house and give me the board for free until the home inspector surfaced massive water damage. The current owner has a reputation of being an A-hole so I’m hoping somehow to get it from him. I agree with ofoaf.. 2. excellent use of ignominy… by the way.

Greg T ..We may have to go on maneuvers and stealth in and get this one. I have a 6” 7” short board that I got the blank for free that is about done that I may offer as a trade for this old classic first though.

Beer fan.. I may have to build a cheap wood racks to keep them from drilling into the new board if they accept the trade.
