I’m just trying to figure out if the runners (I’ve got two of them) should be single
or double foiled. I’m going to use two runners and a longboard-style center fin.
One other question: any ideas on cant and toe for these runners (board is planned at about 6’). Retro/typical numbers will help.
If your not using bonzer runners and a bonzer centre fin its not a bonzer and so the bonzer numbers have no appliction to your setup.
There is nothing more annoying than someone taking their own loose interpretation of a highly organised system and then when they dont get what they expect write off the system. Dont fall into that trap.
If you want to build a bonzer according to the proven formula, i’d be happy to help.(It’s all in other threads anyway)
hmm. This board is somewhat of a collaborative effort, and I’m trying to build the fins for it. I’ve only ridden two bonzers and one I heard was “traditional” and the other was “a modern version.” The “modern version” looked pretty much like a fish to me with a pin tail, and it had some low runners and a what looked to be a longboard-style, curved center fin. I mostly looked at the concave and the shape and didn’t pay close enough attention to the fin set-up I guess, which is where I’m running into a problem now. I’ve found numbers on the sizes of these fins and the shape, but I don’t know if the runners are usually foiled.
I’d definitely be interested in the proven formula so I can see where I’m going wrong. I thought my numbers on the fins were close, but I’d be more than happy to scrap what I have and start over. It also looks like I need to do a lot more reading. I’ll do some reading and then come back with better questions. Thanks.
you really, really need to go to www.bonzer5.com , the campbell bros. web site and do some research! and use the search option here to find the template for the fins…if you do it wrong and the board is a dog, you’ll end joining the legion of those who think they have tried a Bonzer and think they suck…set it up correctly!
I definitely don’t plan on being in the camp of people who think Bonzers suck. I loved the two I got to ride and I really hope to have one someday. I have encouraged others to get onto them as well, which is why I’m in the position I’m in now. I never mind being told I need to read more, though, especially if I have a good sense of where to go.
Well, technically, I guess you could say that the traditional runners are doubled foiled. But those runners are only about 3/16 thick, maximum. And the fins have a very long base. So how much of a foil can you do on a fin like that? I'll have to check my vintage bonzers later, but my memory seems to be that the edge of the runners are just sort of rounded over, not really foiled.
don’t worry, otis. I’m definitely not shaping it. I’m going to work on my hack planer skills on some reject blanks first, and then I have templated a fish that I want to do for myself.
Thanks, I tried to give up shaping, but fate had other ideas. I have a bonzer in the bay and a load of blanks . I spent last night with Rich Pavel as he shaped. Go figure
I’m super stoked again but I can’t find my trimming plane, I guess I’ll have to learn to use a spokeshave properly
