I’m about to shape another bonzer and have a question about fin placement. I own a 6’3" MC HP bonzer 5 and the last bonzer I shaped was basically a copy of that board. This time I want to scale it up from 6’3" to 6"8" and make something similar to the speed egg or pod shapes with 5 fins. I don’t have access to either of those to copy. I plan to keep the tail at 1ft up the same width as the 6’3", increase the wide point by 1 inch and pull in the round egg nose a bit closer to the more rare pod shapes. I was wondering how much do I move the bonzer fin set-up foward for a 5 inch increase in length on this shape. Thanks.
Don’t change fin placement. Keep same distance from tail and rail.
fins move 1" per foot of board length. I wouldn’t change position for such a small difference

But that’s a 5" increase in length. So that’s almost half a foot. So shouldn’t they move almost a half an inch foward. I know if I move my quad fins even 1/4" foward I feel the difference. Is the bonzer set-up less sensitive to small movements? Thanks for the help, I’m just trying to clarify because it seems a bit odd to me not to move them.
“But that’s a 5” increase in length. So that’s almost half a foot. So shouldn’t they move almost a half an inch foward. "
That's what I would do.

And if I remember correctly from reading a previous thread you’ve shaped a butt load of bonzers.
One last clarification if I can bug you…
Do I keep the same distance from the rail when I move them foward? I think I remember reading that the distance from the rail was critical with the bonzer set-up.
“Do I keep the same distance from the rail when I move them foward?.”
Yes
Thanks!
I bow to you far far far superior knowledge O master.
On another related Ace, I spent many hours recently trying to re-design the bonzer 5 fin layout to have an extended range - fatter waves etc. I eventually came up with a fin layout design that on paper that should work. Then I realised it looked familiar — your 6 shooter, talk about re-inventing the wheel. Doh!

You better talk to my wife!
The six fin thing came about several years ago. I was working for a relatively conservative shop that had a hard enough time getting into the five finners. One of the “kids” wanted me to make him a board. He wanted something really different and made the mistake of asking “have you got any ideas?”. I had the idea bouncing around in my head for awhile just could not put it to foam. I knew from all the “grief” the experts in the parking lot have given me over the years for some of the other stuff I have tried this would really set em off. Also I had some concerns about it WORKING. I told him that I felt that it would either work really good or really bad. He said go for it. Unfortunatly it worked REALLY GOOD!
I have not sold too many but the one’s that are out there have been riden to death. To me it always seems “funny” that the boards that are my least favorite in the water are the best sellers. It takes a shop that is behind some of this “new” stuff and willing to understand it and relate that to the customer. Education, Customer service, in a surf shop!?
Whatever enough ranting…Set one up and try it. Had one go through your way several years ago, Glen from Star surfing co. here in San Diego took a green one to Ireland. Said it worked great there.
Thanks Ace. It’ll be the next board I build, I’m thinking 6’6" Nugget shape. I got a lot of work to do on the house and converting my van over the coming months so I think it will be a new year project. I’ll be in touch.

I believe you are right and that is what the Campbell Brothers due for “Bonzers” however do what you think is of right of course.
