Bonzer3 bumblebee / Lost Rocket mashup.

Hi guys,

After finishing off my Makita mods, covered elsewhere on the forum I finally got around to shaping a board with it.

i have a list of about 6 boards on my short list so I rolled the dice and hit it.

Bumblebee/rocket it is.

I did maybe 8 boards 20 years ago, and have wanted to get back to it for so long. Pretty happy, with it!

5’8" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/8". Balsa 6oz runners of me own construction. Maybe the mainsail too if I can be farked.

Edit: I wanted to build something a bit shorter (I ride 6’ and above) that I could get in early, rail the living shit out of and get tubed on. I’m 75kg, and she’s a bit fuller in the rails than I’m used to but the tail is fine, so…fingers crossed!

Cheers

I love it.  My dims too!

I ride this board a lot.  Its a B*nzer 3 shaped by Danny Martinez.  It is slightly bigger than the board you are building at 5-10 x 20 but when this dies I will be replacing it with something like the dims on your board.  This kind of board can be ridden from thigh high to just OH no problem.  I see you have a big 7" fin there, for me on this type of board a 6" fin is perfect.

There’s a lengthy review of it on my blog.

GREAT to see this … good stuff , clammy !

fin boxed too , great idea !

any wild spray or resin tint for it ?

    cheers

can’t wait to hear how it goes , and where you end up riding it ? [ … ‘p.m.’ me , if you like ?  cheers !]

Hey guys,

ifallalot, I actually read you blog just before I got started. I’ve come across your Danowar multiple times on the bb and google. It looks really good, and def was part of my settling on B3 setup.

i asked some advice of Tim Stafford a while back and he said 6" too, with a narrow base. A mate has a 6"TA, so I’ll have a go and then probably make one.

Ben, hey mate hope yr scoring in Vic.

I would really love to glass this one myself, epoxy job. But I don’t think I’ve got the right place especially for the sanding. So maybe it’s off to the pros, and I’ll keep it clear and mysterious!

just thinking which one to shape next…

say hi to colin earle from ben chipper [me]

any updates on the ‘mashup’ [bumblebee]  , mr. clams masher ??

  cheers

  ben

Ifallalot , that looks great !

I’ll try to do a darker copy , to see the concaves clearer .

  cheers

  ben

… hmmmm.  THIS , was as dark , and contrasty , as the photo editing hardware would allow me to go , on your photo…

photo zdarkerbonzer_zps5cce7689.jpg

…is there  any chance of some 'closer up ’ shots of the bonzer bottom , maybe lit from the side , to better show those concaves , please , ‘Ifallalot’ ?

  cheers !

  ben

Ben

I’ll try and shoot a bottom shot for you later on today

thanks very much !

a plain background [grass or cement] , and the sun   sideon to the board , helps with concave photos , I have found , in the past.

Which reminds me …one of these days I should get simon’s campbell brothers bonzer5  down off the ceiling , for some shots , maybe ?

[nice bogsite , by the way…that ochre ‘bumblebee’ looks fun … was that a moonlight glassing / ‘surfy surfy’ one ??]

Yeah, the Bumblebee was actually Peter St Pierre’s personal at one point.  It was too big for me but I liked it

Hi Ben,

I’ll say G’day to Colin for you!

I will most likely put it in for glassing with Colin’s glasser this week, but I got bogged down making the runners and I’m still not sure if I’ll have them done in time.

I wanted light and thin so I layed up 1.5mm balsa with 6oz each side. I just have to cut them out, and sand…

…’ Pinliner ’ , eh ?

  whatever happened to HIM ?

He  used to post here  , ‘once upon a time’ …

  clammy …

  7 " base x 3 1/2" runners , am I close ??

this just might be the first bonzer three that ? wade? [lanno] has ever glassed ?

or are you going through ‘Oceanline’ , in ? wangara ?]

  cheers

  ben

… a bonzer3 is about the ONLY board my brother DOESN’T have in his extensive collection , here …

I believe it’s Wade, but we haven’t met.

. That reminds me, I wanted to see if Oceanline had a place to shape occasionally. I need better lighting.

The template I have is 9.75 x 2.75". Only 1/8" or so thick and basic chamfered edge for foil. I was thinking as an alternative I could route some of my 1/4" fin panel to the right thickness, but it’s a bit wasteful…

wow

huuuge base length for a 5’8 board !

sure that isn’t overfinning it , clammy ?

I had a 5 1/2 - 6 " box fin , and a couple of 5 x 2 1/2 runners on my ‘prawn’ [ 5’11 x 20"] , a few years ago, now . …

well, 10.30pm sunday here now , so …

  catchya tomoz !

  cheers

  ben

AFAIK all of the Campbell’s bonzers use the same base length, but I can always grind em off and try again!

I’ll go for a 6" main of my own device I think, but I’ve been a bit shy of foiling fins lately…don’t want to get itchy.

im really eager to try her out!

Maybe you could [plan B] , try some probox plugs , with the angled inserts ?

THAT ,  would allow you to try a FEW different sized side runners , rather than butchering your creation with a grinder , mate …

True that. Got me thinking

that was my intention

  'night mate !

Picked it up today,

swell on the way…could life be sweeter?

well, we shall see how she goes but it feels nice.

That came out sweet! This is your first board in 20 years, you’ve got skills!

What’s the black around the finbox? Is that black resin used to set the box, or a pinline? The reason I ask is because of the square corners. Not to many routers out there that cut square corners!
