I am about to start my second board and have been keeping my eye open for a cheap planer (first board was shaped with hand tools). I found a used Bosch 3365 for $60 at a local flea market. It looked to be in good shape and worked fine. Has anyone ever used this model? Is this a decent planer for a newbie? I have found them online for $70 used, so the price seems fair. Any advice would be appriciated.
you should not have more difficult than another planner, sure you need a bit of practice
Actually, when i bought mine, i thought that it was the 3365 i would have (wrong advertisement at the shop) i ended up satisfied with the one i have (in rebate for 50$ :o )
the fact that you can change the side of the exhaust can be nice if you don’t use a shop-vac
Art :
I first started by filling the slides on the botom with Bondo, ( bondo is good because its light weight compared to resin)
I removed the small red stand at the back.
Then i changed the handle’s angle (if you search on the forum, there is a lot of topic about it) cut the handle at the angle you like then glue it, when the glue is set, just use some laminating resin with fiberglass to reenforce it, then cutlap the gap and holes so you can disassemble the whole thing after as needed. you will need to reroute the wires and pushbutton.
While i changed the handle i took appart the push button and removed the lock (don’t do it if your not confident using the planer without the safety feature ) its makes easiers shaping but it’s hell a dangerous tool if someone takes it and don’t know its “unlocked”
Last thing, i unscrewed the depth adjustment handle and removed the two spring plates (2 little rectangles of sheetmetal under the handle) those are responsible for the “clicking” feel when you adjust the depth.
Next mod will be a lever on the depth adjutment handle then a exhaust pipe wich would go in my shop-vac
This planer as you say is very rugged and blades are easy to change, the only drawback is the eavy weight, its a bit hard on the wrist.
Mine looks very similar
and it worked like a charm,
i just don’t remember the part number but i think the only difference is that you can change the side of the output.
Thanks Rotule, I just don't want to buy something that is going to be difficult to use.

rotule,
Did you do the mod's to the planer handle? What other things did you change? I have one just like that and love it. It is easy to clean, the blades are a cinch to change out and are easy to find.
Awesome! I am going to pick it up this weekend then, fill in the grooves with resin or bondo, and start hacking away at some foam! Thanks again.
Give us some feedbacks
how do you like it, what mods did you do?
Rotule I went back to get it that weekend and it was already sold..............he gets used planners in pretty regular though, so I stop by his booth pretty regular. Only a matter of time before he gets another one.
