For those of you that are familiar with the bosch planers, I was looking for some help. I have looked at all of the past post and seen good things about them but wanted to know if anybody has addressed the difference in the two models that are offered (3365 & 1594k).
I noticed a difference in amps rpm’s and number of blades ( 1 vs. 2) and $40 in price.
For those that have used the 3365 is it sufficient and for those that have the 1594, is it worth the difference?
I like the little single-blade one for surfboards but I also own an older version of the Bosch 2-blade planer that I use on wood.
Before I figured out a better way, I mowed a couple longboards out of 5" thick EPS. No hotwire, no templates (except outline). And I did it on stands which were a little too high, with the heavier Bosch planer.
The end result was a case of tennis-elbow that lasted at least 3 months. So I fixed the stands, bought the lighter planer, and use other tools to do 90% of the reducing.
I use the 1594k and am very happy with it. I’ve already modded the handle and shoe, but I think that I’m do the mod of the dust collection that RickHolt (I think thats who it was) did.
I have looked, and the weight difference between the two is 1lb which doesnt seem like that would be a big difference. From the other post that I have read the main cause for replacing planers is unsealed bearings going bad. Do either of you know whether the bearings are sealed? Thanks for the help.
My 3365 works great. No complaints. I hooked up a shop vac for the exhaust with the cord and hose (slinky hose from foamez.com $16.95) strung up to the ceiling to get it of the way. The 3365 cutting adjustment has “click” steps for each thickness. To make it smooth I cut a small notch the base of the knob turned it over and then gave it a swift kick. The spring loaded tensioner pops out. Rotate the handle to where the second thingymabob is (you can see it where the notch is cut) and knock it out as well. The knob now turns smooth.

I have the old 9 pound 3296 that I think the 1594 replaced. The 1594 has more power and almost twice the cutting depth. I would go with the 1594 – that will take you to 1/10 of an inch. Its interesting the new bosh planners are made in Malaysia – mine was made in Switzerland. Not sure if the traditional Bosh quality is going to be the same – I think Skil bought them out a few years ago.
Thanks for the good information. In the grand scheme of things it seems like the 3365 will suffice for the amount of shaping that I will be doing, plus the 3365 makes a slightly shallower cut which will keep me from making as big of a mistake should I make one. I thought it was interesting that the 3365 is made in Malaysia and the 1594 is made in Switzeralnd. Both have the one year warranty so I guess it doesn’t matter.
Did you try taking the knob off first? I have tried and it is on pretty solid. It seems by looking at it that if you were to take both of the spring loaded balls out from under the base of the knob that there would be nothing to stop the knob from rotating freely 360.
