bottom for egg-type board

I was wondering what type of bottom would be good for a 7’2 - 7’4 egg type board ? I am looking at shaping an egg type shape with about a 15- 16N , 20 W 14T (still finalizing the #'s) and set up with a long box and side biters for maximum versatility. I was thinking a panel vee on the bottom? Any comments or feedback on this design? I plan to use it in East Coast surf

Thanks for the help!

A lot depends on fins. With side-biters, I’d say the turning force comes from the fins, keep the tail flat. Flat tails are always faster, and the tail is narrower, so you need the lift there. For shorter boards a concave under the front foot supports the turn better, but for a 7’2 - 7’4" you might not need it. There’s nothing wrong with flat. Or a real subtle vee (like 1/8 inch). I would certainly do a flat tail and a very subtle concave under the front foot if it were for me and in east coast (US) surf.

OTOH, without the side-biters, some tail vee will help turn the board. The McCoy nugget singles have vee. deepening tail vee is a slower design - it drags on the tail where the board profile is narrow anyway, but works with a single to turn the front end around. And the concave under the front foot is not so useful on a single - you can’t have much weight forward on a turn on a rigid single fin.

Fins and bottom contours work together.

i would recommend a single fin with a flat rocker and a vee in the tail to roll off of. That is what works best for me. If you would like some pics let me know.

I want to build a 7’4" range egg and would love to see your pictures.

You description is exacty what I think I want to build.

SF4M,

I’d love to see a pic of the board. I’m a rookie shaping my own boards, just finished my first one last week (waiting for the glassing to be finished by a shop) but I’m already planning my next one. Would the 7’4"R be a good choice for this board?

Thanks
