ok i put this on here before…and it dissapeared with no reply…well i messed up on the bottom lam and it gelled too fast so i ve an area on one rail about a foot long where the cloth got covered by hard resin and didnt stick on the rail , i sanded through the resin and took off the hardened cloth so now its a bare spot.im wondering if i should cut a patch of cloth for the rail and resin it on before i do the top lam? or maybe do the top with a little extra overhang in the area instead? i just want it to be strong here i feel like if its not reinforced somehow ill have problems there everytime i ride.
i doubt you’d have too many problmes, but let me get this straight first: you have part of the rail from your first lam (bottom, correct?) uncovered. If I’m right, and you really want to fix it, when you do your deck lam, make the first cloth layer cover the uncovered spot. it may be a little hard to sand (easy with a dremel tool) but can be done if you want to. Hope i helped.
ive only done the bottom so far and i have the bare spot on the rail, thanks to my carelessness its just to very edge of the bottom and around to the deck i cannt be the only person this has ever happend to…shure someone can help, like i said i just dont want to do ding repairs every time i ride just because i dont fix it ahead of time.
oh and yeah every little bit helps…thanks.
sounds like you know what to do… you already cut off the fiberglass not sticking the foam (good) , now just put a patch on that area (like you suggested). http://groups.msn.com/thegrasshoppersurfboard/shoebox.msnw
so let me get this straight, ive got one vote for a patch and one for covering it on the deck lam. so im still stuck on what to do.
bob, i think your over exaggerating. and i think that i cant spell. anyway, a little part of the rail with only one layer of fiberglass (a normal deck lap should cover it up) wont buckle more and more after everywave. Where are you located? My guess could be wrong if your surfing something heavier than the east coast (which isnt hard to do). But what ever your decision, be happy . go surf. life is good.
Cover exposed foam with lap from top, then patch when dry then hotcoat and sand as normal. You’ll never notice it when it’s glossed and waxed up.
yeah ok mabey i should stop stressing. i cant expect it to be perfect, but at the same time i dont want it to be complete crap , well im going to start finishing this thing tommorow i hope whatever i do i dont have a deck screw up also…no i think i learned my lesson. thanks for the input.
