I cracked my wifes poly board from rail at nose to mid way across the bottom. I’ve used epoxy but poly only once and could only find fast harder, and it browned. The crack splits twice, and is from a previous Owners bad repair. It’s has a few soft spots’ and some delam from the foam.
Should I try to lam resin under cracks, under delams, and between soft spots and clothe.
Then lam coat with layers over cracks
Then hot coat and polish?
What’s the deal with poly resin. It was brown with only clear fast hardener. I have epoxy but know I can’t polish it.
I need it to look as new as possible, or wife will never let me use another one of her boards.
I have experience with epoxy, but had problems with soft spots pulling from lam layer. Any help is very much approached.
Sc, cola. I do. Apparently none of you are married. I broke my wifes board and she wants it fixed. She’s actually took mine this week on vac. Plus she’s pissed at me.
I guess I’ll just take it to a surf shop two hrs away, let some punk smear resin on it, pay them to much, and hear about it the next time it goes in the water, since no one will help me.
poly resin doesn’t use hardener, it uses catalyst, in very small amounts. If poly resin is brown, its probably because you have boat resin, not surfboard resin. Or it was mixed with way too much catalyst in it.
to do the ding repair you probably need to sand, grind, and/or remove the damaged fiberglass, you can’t just smear resin into soft spots and under delams (well you can but it usually doensn’t work). Then you need to repair the damage to the foam, and then reglass it. It is hard to figure out from your description, but a combination of soft spots, cracks, and delamination (which sounds pretty bad) could use a number of different methods to fix… can be done with a Dremel, with a sander, or if you’re careful with a grinder. Or by hand with sandpaper/razor/knife etc., but that would take much longer.
Thanks, I know you cant just smear it. Being sarcastic. I’ve sanded 60 grit and Removed small flakes. Guess I should use white gorilla glue on foam split and under lam at soft spots? Then I’ll epoxy in cracks, clothe over all, sand and hot coat. I’ve made epoxy xps boards so I’ll just try To go with the what I’ve done on them. Just never had luck on soft spots. Don’t know what to do with them or with poly resin
Howzit Cwgib, Since you don't seem to know much about ding repair and what you need fixed is beyond your knowledge then by all means take it to a real repair guy. If you try to do it yourself and mess it up the little lady will really be mad and won't let you forget it. Aloha,Kokua
The only problem I have with that is, I’ve taken boards for ding repairs. They fix them, and as soon as there pressure in the area of repair, I’m taking water back in. If anyone know a great repair guy in south Carolina I might be up for it, but I’m sick of wasting money on repairs that don’t last. The last repair I had done actually looked like they just smeared resin in the crack an sanded it back down. No clothe, resin pilled right off.
This was apparently a used board to begin with and it had prior repairs from prior damage. This damage probably occurred on this spot in part because of the stress point created by the prior filler-heavy repair. Whitewashing over it with another repair will only get you off the hook for it until the next time the board gets bumped, which will open that repair area again. Then your wife will be mad at you for the fix as well as “your” ding, which really occurred in large part because of the prior ding.
Used poly boards are super cheap right now - as cheap or cheaper than getting a proper fix this repair area. I would consider that to be the first option. Your wife will appreciate that. You just have to make sure you never touch the new board.
Option 2 is to do a complete fix, which includes stripping the delam off, cutting out the prior fix, gluing in some replacement foam, shaping it down to fit the original shape and lamming over it with fresh surfboard resin and cloth.
Option 3 is to attempt the quickie fix and hope the next time your wife bumps the board it breaks clean in half.
ok. without any pictures, all i can give is some very generalized assistance. as you build epoxy boards, then you probably have tools and sandpaper. so now you need:
1. lam resin (249A).
2. MEKP (catalyst)
3. acetone
4. some 4 oz cloth
5. gloves, which u probably already have.
6. filler. i use Qcell. i don't advise u to use spackle. u could use a 2 part pour foam for filler.
7. wax additive also known as surfacing agent (SA).
8. styrene
if there is no place near you that sells this stuff, you can purchase on line from Fiberglass Florida, or SurfSource or FoamEZ.
now here's your news alert. it is not going to look like new after you repair it. but it can be a good clean repair job.
going from your limited description, i would break out the power sander and sand the cracks until i could not see them at all, meaning you would probably be down to the cloth. and sand out all the boat resin too. then i would either cut out or sand thru the delam (s)until i hit foam. then hand sand or otherwise remove the dead foam. replace the dead foam with a mixture of filler and resin. not too much mekp or the filler will crack. you want the stuff to be just below the level of the undamaged board. then i would cut a patch of cloth that would cover all the cracked area as well as the delams, and would lap onto the undamaged bottom all around. lam it on. then, using the wax additive and lam resin, mix up your sanding coat. apply. sand. use the lam resin and the additive and the styrene for a gloss coat. polish.
oh. first step in the glassing process. open the can of acetone and have a clean rag nearby.
You would get much better and specific answers if you post some pics. If you know anyone with an iphone maybe they can post a pic for you.
When I grew up learning to fix your own dings was just part of being a surfer.
It's possible that after the repair, You could hide the repair under a pigment panel, and have it come out looking pretty nice. This of course depends on wher the ding is.
No I have two boards, she has one. I liked hers, it was fun to ride. Now she has My favorite, bc I broke her only. No longboards. Short and funshape. She took mine till hers is fixed. Now I’m left with my beater board which I don’t like very much.
