How or what it the best way to put new fins on a board. I got two broken fins, there is one glassed on fin still good. Fin boxes, glass it on. How do i do it?
If you’ve no objections to ‘boxed fins’, why not grind the old ones level and install some type of box system. It’s a hellofalot easier than trying to set fin cant. You will need to dig the box holes. Usually, a router is used in assoc. with jigs but there are many ways to skin that cat. I’ve used a dremel and a small router bit. It takes some time but it works. You could almost use an exacto knife on the thrusters but the center something tougher. I read somewhere of someone using a small cutting wheel on a drill to inch by inch score the glass for the boxes then exactoing the foam out carefully. Sounds crazy but it may work.
…I can remember my first box set job,I did it with a box cutter, chisel, steak knive, and body file. The hole down past the glass was crudely horrible by my standards today, but after the box was set,and sanded,it looked as well as a routed/set job.It just took all day!!!Herb
Do you have any suggestions on the installation procedure, ways to make it easier, maybe something like suncure on the outparts of the box, someone said that may work?
…The easiest way is with the correct tools and experience.USING SUNCURE,only on the exposed parts, not down in the hole.Herb
I’ve installed many boxes with no power tools and it really didn’t take that long. After tracing around the box, I taped a metal ruler just outside one edge of the trace as a guide. Using a sharp awl, I poked tiny holes in the corners and scored several times until through the glass - retaping the ruler outside another edge after finishing each side. After scoring, the glass piece peels out and a sharp chisel cuts out the foam. Glass in the box as usual. For a guy doing just a board or two on a budget, it works. Glassing shops will sometimes route it out for you for a few bucks but you’re looking at driving, hassling the glassers and paying the guy. Plus they always find (and never hesitate to point out) all the flaws in your board!
