Building a rolling pin drum sander

Hey. I’m stuck. Trying to build this thing and I need a handle that spins for one end of it. I’ll use a steel rod epoxied in the other end with a cordless drill to power it. I recall someone here had already solved this but I can’t find the post. I bought the rolling pin at Target for anyone interested.

thanks for any help.

You need a rolling pin with ball bearing handles. http://www.webstaurantstore.com/ateco-18325-18-professional-rolling-pin-maple-wood-august-thomsen/14418325.html?utm_source=Amazon. The other end we had a plate welded on to an engine valve with holes to screw on to the end that went into the drill motor. This has to be straight and centered or the thing wobbles all over the place. Good luck

I believe Resinhead recently posted a build on one of these.

That was me about two months ago.

thx everyone.

Ace, got one coming.  Thanks so much.

all the best

Oops, i stand corrected… i need to bookmark that thread… id like to make one

Depends on the intended purpose…is it hand held or bench mounted ?..If its high revving , you’ll need perfectly aligned bearings both ends , inside of the drive , with matched housings. Discuss it with a good wood-turner…there’s also off the shelf inflatable dolly sander attachments with easily changeable sleeves with different grits available .

Why the hell would you want to sand an inflatable dolly??

Chafeing alert!!

Here is my version.

.

That’s neat Mako - first time Ive ever seen one of those.

I watched the vid Gadgetuk and (all humour aside) , a dolly sander would work well. It is an inflatable cylinder with rubber inner-tube that can be deflated to low pressure or pumped up to be as hard as wood . The abraisive sleeves are quick and easy to change , and any grit can be used …also inexpensive and off-the shelf…interesting !

My version out of PVC pipe, ball bearings, Phister valves and 40 weight.

I had one of the inflatables. Could see no use for shaping foam surfboards.

Nice work Resinhead. Where do you find bearings? Skate shop?  I assume you put a pair of them in the PVC handle? All thread rod down the middle?

I used one for about 13yrs than stopped. Have not used one in over 20 years have not missed it. Good job Resinacabeza.

3/4 plywood cut end plugs to fit inside of pvc…used a hole saw to cut end plug, epoxied them in with the all thread in place. The pilot hole from the hole saw will align perfectly in center. So  all you need  to do is get the proper hole sawcut out that fits in the innerdia of the PVC pipe.  easy.

I got the bearings from a industrial supply place…they had literally Millions of different bearings…all .25 to $1.00 each, I got one that fit around the all thread size.  The all thread runs all the way into the handle…The handle has bearing in it.  The handle is 1/2 PVC. I just pushed the proper bearings into the 1/2 PVC and epoxied into place.  The PVC cap hides the nut that locks the all thread…the cap keeps your hand from getting chewed up by the spinning all thread.

There probably more but my pea brain cant remember.

Brilliant. Thx

I’ll take that tip Cleanlines…enough on the plate already without travelling down more dead-end roads.
