bumps in my lamination

I have these bumps resulting from rail lap onto the deck.  I applied the hotcoat thinking this would allow me to sand out the bumps with more ease.  Can I just go at this with a sander and then re glass the area and apply another hotcoat?  anyone have an easier or more effective solution?.  much appreciated.

I think you’ll have better luck with responses if you could post a picture.

If it's what I think it is you need to take more time after you've laminated the bottom. Once the bottom is dry you need to apply a layer of hotcoat about 3" wide along the edge of the lap on the deck. This is then sanded which evens out any bumps, takes the the sharp edges off the cloth where the lap meets the deck and also fills in the height difference between the foam and the laminate. If you take real care when you sand this you'll find you don't have any bumps at all coming through the deck laminates.

If that was the cause of your problem - hope the info helps....but that dosen't fix your current problem - If you have gone through a lot of cloth Id be tempted to lay another layer of cloth where you've sanded through and rehotcoat ensuring you take the hotcoat a couple of inches beyond edges of new layer.

I’ve got a similar problem. I had issues with the bottom lam/lap and I didn’t sort them out prior to doing the deck lam (I only briefly sanded them). When I laid the deck lam, not only was it severly affected by the lack of uniformity around the lap, but the resin started to kick as a result of reflecting UV rays.  Screwed the lam up pretty bad with bubbles and wrinkles in the cloth while rushing to finish it. I am cutting out the bubbles and wrinkles, then sanding down a bit with surform and sandpaper prior to patching and hot coating. Haven’t finished the process yet, but i’ll let you know if it works out. Best to get the lap squared away prior to moving on the to deck lam in my opinion.

If anyone else has any ideas on how to fix a poor deck lam job other than whats described above, I’d love to hear your ideas.

Good Luck.
