Just got them. $17.00 prime on Amazon. Micro serrated to cut fiber glass without slipping. All metal. I have a few pairs of the Ginghers plastic ones with the metal cutting edge and they have served. But these are top drawer and cheaper.
Buy them. Do as I say. Don’t make me come over there.
I bought one pair. I only do a couple of boards per month but demand the best in tools. Amazon is great…I buy my rollloc sanding disks and the 3m red 500 grit sandpaper there. The 3m red is pretty new and made for sanding without water. I can do a funshape with 2 sheets and go straight to Surluster compound with wool pad. Thanks Greg!
Ok Greg looks good I bought a pair, but if I don’t like them I’m sending them back to you for refund. Wonder if they have them in longer blades
I could never get the hang of using the industry standard Wiss scissors so years back I started using use the orange handled fiskars titanium nitride shop scissors, I love the grippy cutting edge, it takes a little getting used to but I swear by themhttp://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Premier-Titanium-Nitride-12-96536984/dp/B000VYOISU . I use them new exclusively for cutting glass but they start to wear out after dressing about 15 boards. I keep a new one on the ready and retire the old one to cutting other shit.
So tell me what in your opinion(s) is the advantage for using a serrated edged scissor?? I know some guys who use a serrated edge for Kevlar and Carbon, but tell me why this would be an advantage for E, S, Warp etc. Serrated scissors tend to wravel. Tried 'em once. So let’s hear it. Maybe the “micro serrated”??? I use Weiss, Harbor Freight(.99) and a pair of Electric.
I got 1 set Xmas 2012 I still use all three pairs daily. Cutting glass all day long. 2 oz, 4, 6, 8 Volan, S-Glass Thousands of yards of glass on that first 10" pair and they still cut just as clean as the first day I bought em.
This year I stalked the HD’s after xmas and they went to 5.00 a set for a while and I bought 5 sets. Just for the future.
The middle size in this pack cuts vector
the small size is decent for smaller lams.
The set I bought in 2012 is one of the best “tool” values ive bought.
The middle size from 2012 is in our sanding room and has probably cut a few thousand sheets of paper as well and still going strong.
Hey Bud, another fiskars fan here. My wife goes to yard sales / estate sales all the time, its her business (antiques and collectibles), and oftener than not I’m out there with her on a Sat. morning. I pick up scissors galore, at cheap prices, so I have a boatload, the fiskars are far and away the best (the others are good for cutting sandpaper and whatnot). I keep 'em sharp with one of these little babies (picked up at yardsale, haha)
Not necessarily an advantage - I can’t get the Wiss scissors and other high quality knife edged dress maker shears to cut slippery fiberglass cloth consistently. I know it’s operator error but I got tired of trying to make it work - for me It pushes the cloth more often than cuts.
I glass wth E, S and Warp. The micro serrated edges on the 9" titanium fiskars shop shears grip the cloth as it cuts. and it cuts all the way to the tip like good quality scissors should. you have to be careful not to snag the cloth but I’ve used them enough not to be any problem. Unfortunately I don’t think the micro serrated edges can be sharpened
I have an an old pair of weiss. I get them sharpened at a local upholstery shop. Seems like sharpening is a lost art. I can remember a guy who had a truck and would go door to door sharpening knives and scissors, axes, shovels you name it.
McDing, that is what I admire about you. Not easily led. There are certain finishes on cloths that just slip off the edge of the scissors. Direct Size for one. The micro serrated edge grips the cloth for a clean cut. I got a roll of DS recently from FH and could not cut it for the life of me. Looked like a rats nest when I got through. The micro edge cut super clean. Like Cleanlines, I like good tools.
I use the EC Cutter. But I’m just a garage builder. I’d hate to go back to manual cutting anything. No strings, Free laps that look like cut laps, almost.
Dwight----- Just keep doing what you are doing and don’t look back. Almost nobody in the Industry uses them. I’ve loaned mine to a couple of glassers and they didn’t even try’em. First of all they are experts with a pair of long bladed shears. Secondly they are just slow to change. A really progressive glasser from Santa Cruz turned me onto using them years ago. All I use manual scissors for now are relief cuts. Electric scissors are fast and wravel free. Lowel
