Cabin Fever

Paul, It didn’t get much beyond the intial run. Considering the local resources on Maui, it would have to be characterized if done these days as something like taking coals to Newcastle. But…didn’t he design something he called a “dolfin” - a skeg based on the dorsal fin of a bottlenose dolphin? Looked kinda like George Greenough’s 4C (?)

Hynson’s “travel baggage” … it’s the thought that counts! Besides, somebody has to pioneer this stuff! Yes, Mike did make a “dolfin” fin. Small, and very thick. I have one, and I’ve never gotten it to work. I think it was for his thick, super hard railed boards of the mid-70’s.

When I’m stuck in “the cabin”, either by sloth, weather, or whatever, I find good pumping surf videos to make me more edgy, not less. However, let me offer the notion that “The Far Shore” is a good one for just such emergencies. Travel, tropics, cold water, reality, and it’s brain food rather than the brain candy so often delivered…plus a good soundtrack.

No question: he was a real innovator. He put away the hollow concept, but that filler he used was unquestionably sound. Circa 1970, so pampers weren’t around. It was some natural fiber. No MSDS on it: I think that the regulatory agency was the DEA not OSHA.

Several of his “water chamber” boards were for sale at the Beach House in Santa Barbara a couple years ago.

Since this is a design forum, guys, let’s not forget the scene in Barefoot > Adventure where Harold Walker comically tries to blow his own blank to > make a new board…like Harold couldn’t blow his own blank successfully!!! Howzit Paul, That was Del Cannon doing the foam thing in Harolds factory. Aloha, Kokua

Howzit Paul, That was Del Cannon doing the foam thing in Harolds factory. > Aloha, Kokua That’s right! I think Harold Walker is in one of the early Brown movie skits…I’m working from memory here. I haven’t got the videos.

That’s right! I think Harold Walker is in one of the early Brown movie > skits…I’m working from memory here. I haven’t got the videos. Dude, didn’t Del run away from Harold with big foam feet ?

Dude, didn’t Del run away from Harold with big foam feet ? Yeah, maybe that’s where I got the recollection of Walker in that scene.

Several of his “water chamber” boards were for sale at the Beach > House in Santa Barbara a couple years ago. – Hynson? Those were bongs disquised as boards…

Living in Seattle in winter is like being in an endless George Romero > movie with a bad day-for-night filter on for the entire running time. Four > years ago there was a stretch of 90+ days with no sun, as in not one ray. > I second “Cosmic Children”. A Santa Barbara guy, Dan Wozniak > made a couple of great little films, “Ten Toes Over” and > “Siestas and Olas” that are like a couple of nice little > vacations in S. Cal and Mexico. “The Seedling” gets my vote for > best overall flow- music and images…at least the sun is heading back > north now… Howzit Billa, I’ve heard that Siestas and Olas has footage of the" secret left point" in it. In 97’ some friends and I surfed it for 2 weeks and it was a really fun wave, not a critical type wave but lots of fun.Aloha, Kokua

Yeah, Kokua, it’s in there. Looks like a nice little wave. Dano describes it in the voiceover as a mirror image of Malibu, same setup, same lagoon, just everything reversed - goofyfoot paradise. And nobody else out. I haven’t been to Mexico yet, but I always hear great things about it. A lot of people from here in the pacific northwest head down there for a dose of warm water and sunlight. Take care.

Well, lately we have watching (again) the Runman movies. All three of them are so rude, so silly, so good. My oh my. Not everyones cup of tea- lots of fights(real), booty, unmakable dry barrels, weird stock footage from the early eighties(aren’t the punk scenes from "rock against reagan in '84?), good natured fun poked at just about everyone and lots of toilet humor. Mike Gerhardt pulling in(almost)over and over at Zuma in runman 69 is great(and painful). lots of blackmail material to pull out on “respected” surfers in these. titus at Kalihiwai(can i say that?) blows my mind in Run-u-mental. My teenager walks around spouting random lines from these movies, much to the amusment of those in the know. Great punk and new wave soundtracks and whats his name from the surfpunks narrating.Disfruta compas.

I dunno, Steiny. Runman vids to cure cabin fevor? I would end up in a mental institution if I was snowed in and watched the entire Runman catalog!!! HA HA HA!!! Very good suggestion!

Actually, maybe they could jettison thousands of Runman videos over the Middle East in lieu of leaflets. What better advertisment could there be for Western Culture???

Getting ready to glass a 4’11’ for his son. Aloha, Kokua

Surf Punks, did not know anyone else ever even knew who they were. Thanks for that tip. I now have a great list of “uppers” to occupy myself - thanks everyone. Just to update the situation : Last thursday night, 2 degrees, pipes froze. No water until yesterday when temperatures reached about 32 before plummeting back down to 15. Yeah, the water started flowing again, under the house where the pipe had ruptured. At least there was flowing water there. "Pop the top, a bottom turn. Side slippin’ I’m gonna burn…”
