As far as shipping goes, you have a couple of affordable options, Greyhound or Amtrak. Amtrak coast-to-coast is about $70, Greyhound might be less. You have to figure out where the stations are, and drop off and pick up the board. If you end up in San Francisco, you might have to drop the board in Oakland. I don't think the stations in SF accept freight. You can buy an airline quality travel bag and ship it in that. It would be less hassle but more expensize to bring it on the plane. If you are flying on Southwest, they have reasonable surfboard fees.
yeah, that was a dumb question, wasn’t it? I knew it sounded odd when it came out, but then it took me a minute to realize. Thanks for being generous in your response, and perhaps I will take you up on it some day. Something about Monterrey reminded of a small closely-knit beach community, and I always have a warm fuzzy spot in my heart for places like that.
Seriously get a mabile, i cant say enough about how good my 5’8 keel is or how much of a pleasure it was to deal with mica & larry. I swear i’venever had a bad session on mine & i’m just back from another fun surf on it filled with chest high zippers.
I ordered direct from larmo by phone from the uk last spring & picked up the board in june in florida, i think they charged me $110ish for the shipping from SD to st augustine can’t remember who they used.
that trip’s been on my to do list for so long, not on my wifes unfortunately!
In Solana Beach there is Mitch's surf shop, right next door is Surf Ride surf shop, bring money , I usually try to obtain free reading print from Surf Ride. Both have friendly and cool knowledgeable staff....
Don't do it!!! Don't get married! Take a surf trip to Bali or anywhere and never go back home!! That lady is evil! She will let you surf for a while and then ----- Not good!!! Run man , Run. Out the back door and away!! The farther the better!! Besides who would want to go to california to surf anyway? They'll brake in your car, steal your surfboard and beat you up!!!! Please, please , don't do it!!!
that’s not bad advice…
man!! great advice and one heck of an offer... i am still working out the details. i will let you know if we will be there for a weekend.. Thanks!!
I already have a Larmo keel fish but this thread makes me want to get another one.
i just did this trip for 5 days from encinitas up to morro bay with my girl...we brought my laptop and made hotel reservations the day before or the day of our stay...using travelocity we found hotels as low as $55 a night...if your hotel doesnt have free wireless go to any little cafe and they will...the hotels werent right on the beach, but youll have a rental car...as for fish...every shop i walked into had a decent selection of them...when you get to the central coast just north of hearst castle dont forget to stop and see the elephant seals...there are signs and a parking lot right up the road...also if youre into wine take a detour on 46 to paso robles...tons of wineries and cheaper than other wine regions in ca...some of my favorite easy access spots on the central coast...pismo...morro bay and morro strand state beach...studios (youll see signs for studio dr)...moonstone...there are a million spots...have fun

Kanvas by Katin has a whole rack of modern and retro fishes. They’re in Surfside, just north of Huntington Beach, on Pacific Coast Highway. While there you might as well get a board bag and take it on the flight home.
Have fun.
Make sure to visit Malibu Surfrider. All newcomers are welcome. No hassles! The more the merrier.
From San Luis Obispo (SLO) take Highway 1. Lots of good reefs and beaches. From Cambria, take the road inland to Paso Robles for some of Cali’s best wine regions;
Great Reds as well as supurb eateries. The diversion from the coast is 40mins, and well worth the stop.
for fishes in san diego I would suggest the greenroom on abbot st in ocean beach san diego 92107 - rich pavel
or mitches in la jolla san diego on pearl. mitches north has a good selection too 30 mins north of la jolla
I would recommend checking out la jolla. there are some other spots south of mission beach worth checking out too but I’ll let u find those…
hit encinitas for sure, surf swamis. food in encinitas is great, vgs for the worlds best donut, legendary, pipes cafe for breakfast, pizza port in solana is where the good beer is if u like beer don’t miss it, las olas mexican food in cardiff, ki’s in cardiff for healthy stuff. I would pass on carlsbad and oceanside for sure.
Next up you could check out trestles and san clemente on ur way up the coast. its off season but you may get some uncrowded uppers. sonnys italian restaurant in san clemente is sooooo good. small but just really good and not expensive at all. cruise up the coast for scenic stuff in dana point and laguna beach. women love laguna. after that take the free way to ventura/rincon. santa barbara has some affordable places for sure, montecito is really cool and even around downtown santa barbara is great. check out the channel islands surf shop…
from santa barbara to sf is where the coast is really beautiful, but also rugged. you’ll get less surf but theres more to see. when I drove the coast I left sd for rincon surfed till dark then motored to morro bay got there around 8 or 9. Waking up in morro is cool and puts you right on the road in striking distance to hearst castle and cambria. I went from morro though that stretch arriving in big sur in the afternoon. I would stay in big sur longer then anywhere else. its amazing. after head for santacruz and get in a surf at the lane. then its a short stretch to SF.
when I went I had a minivan and I camped along the way, this was in january. if you guys are into camping its the best. morrow bay has a killer campground for a overnite stop, encinitas/cardiff, santa barbara, jalama is epic, big sur obviously, and santacruz has good camping. let me know if are thinking about camping I can send you the camogrounds I stayed at.
have fun, that drive is the best.
for honey moon u could rent an rv and it would be all time…
schedule wise…
1 day in San Diego
2 days in Santa barbara
2 days in Big Sur
2 days in San Francisco
Enjoy your time in California...please don't call it Cali.....
Did you notice that everyone that lives here does not use that term.............
I'm near Carlsbad ,most of my spots can be seen from the Hwy.....Respect the locals ,smile , surf......have fun....
Ray...
Hahahahahaaha classic!
The other thing i’ve gotta add is, taking a girl to california is like bring a 6-pack to a piss-up in a brewery… or whatever the expression is.
Oh my, they are friendly to accent wielding foreigners over there!
Seriously, do yourself a favour and follow all the instructions given about eating mexican food while you’re there…Its that good. period.
Sleep, Surf, Breakfast Burrito, Sleep, Surf, Fish Tacos, Margaritas, Sleep… That is your daily schedule.
Have fun!
You totally brought back some very vivid memories for me, brother… Took a few weeks and did that trip from north to south with my wife years ago. The surf gods must have been smiling on me, knowing my life was about to fall to pieces shortly after. Big Sur is as romantic a place there is. Did not surf in that area, except for one day at a state park… Pfeiffer maybe? But further south, got lots of waves in places I never heard of, that I most likely couldn’t find again if I was looking. Not a very consistent stretch from what I hear, but there was some pretty good surf at the time. It was my first time traveling the coast just looking for waves. Lots of walking over grassy hills to get to empty beaches (except for the seals) all over the central coast from the area north of San Simeon all the way down to San Luis Obispo. Sunny skies, cool clear water, kelp, rocks, sand… the pictures in my head are there forever. Definatley a special place on this Earth. May sound strange, but that became my favorite part of the state. After that the total “surfer turist” tour of the place was on… Pismo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Malibu… Got Rincon on a small day. San O. was fun… Trestles was kinda crowded by my standards, but people were saying, “it’s not too bad.” Geesh…
But you folks out there are blessed.
Truely blessed…
very cool, we are definately looking foward to making some memories as well..
