At least in Central to Northern California, looks like our fall surf season is going right into winter.
Not sure how practical a fish style board will be in larger conditions or a thinner wetsuit.
As for honeymoon trips, I advise a higher end place for when you get to San Francisco.
Oh, and a tip for San Francisco: the north end of Ocean Beach is smaller than either the the middle or sourth end and a lot more effected by the longshore current.
Not romantic by any stretch; BUT, as you make your way through Northern LA County, Neptune’s Net is worth stopping at (though a bit pricey for the food). County Line is directly across the street (it’s a secret spot - shhhh ;-) ). It’s somewhat historic, and has been in a number of movies (Big Wednesday, Point Break, etc.), as has that whole section of PCH.
As well as hitting the big name points (Malibu, C-Street, Rincon); just keep looking to sea, during “certain” swells, no name breaks can light up in plain sight. Of course the usual rules (Rescect, Smile, Patience, etc.) apply.
Hey Fishy 82, I haven’t seen anyone on here talk about fun places to stay, eat, or hang out in Santa Cruz yet. I live in So Cal but Santa Cruz is MY favorite place to stay. I don’t know if you and your wife are into fancy or funky style - Santa Cruz is definitely the latter and very eclectic! A great, “homestyle” and inexpensive place to stay is the Ocean Echo Inn, off Portola on Johan’s Beach Drive. For breakfast, try the Cliff Cafe at 41st and Portola. And no trip to Santa Cruz is complete without a late-night stop at the Saturn Cafe! Wild and crazy ambience and great vegetarian food. Somebody on here mentioned surfing the Lane, but it might be hard to get waves there as an unfamiliar face - it’s pretty aggro! I’ve always preferred the East Side, the crowd gets mellower the further south you walk from the stairs at the 41st St. parking area. (I’m an intermediate surfer myself- at best! - and not into huge waves or ultra-competitive lineups, maybe your ideal wave situation is different from mine.) There are even some surf shops on 41st where your wife could rent a soft board if she wants to join you out in the water (if she doesn’t surf already, you didn’t say and I figure if she surfed too you would’ve said so! ) That might be a way you can spend more time in the water yourself - LOL! (Oh yeah that’s right - it IS your honeymoon - but we all know you gotta surf too or you’ll be jonesin’ for it!)
Definitely check out Mirandon Surfboards (http://www.mirandonsurfboards.com/). The family has been shaping twins / fish since the 60's. And, Eli Mirandon is pushing it to a whole new level.
Maybe I just hit it the right day but I had zero problems at the lane. caught a ton of waves and had a blast. the crowds are pretty chilly where I am from and I know the rules pretty well, follow them and you should be fine at the lane. surf late evening midday or whenever it looking mellow.
