I’m thinking of taking a trip , sort of a pilgrimage, to check out the clasic californian spots, particularly Malibu, lowers and San Diego & to try out as many boards as possible. Thinking about a week in Mid feb. How consistent is the surf there that time of year ?
Burnsie, Speaking for the San Diego area: February is a mixed bag. There are potentially some good possibilities for head high and up surf if the Gulf of Alaska is working. We often get a good swell around Christmas, but not always.
Wave shape and size will vary alot between San Diego and Malibu on any given day, since S. Cal is shaped like an arc with lots of points, West facing, and South facing exposures. Just come on over. You’ll probably get some good surf. Doug
a little further north of Malibu is Ventura County - C-Street and Rincon.
Feb has potential for some good stuff but at that time of year it is all about the NW swell and if the winds aren’t too bad. Can be great.
I surf weekends and have some longboards I can bring to meet up for a surf. My profile has my email.
Thanks. booked it
15 Feb to 22 Feb, it’ll give me a few months to do the research! if anyone is interested in lending me a camper/RV for the week, I’ll lend them my VW Camper in Ireland for a bit of exploration of our many uncrowded waves.
Looking forward to meeting a few of you.
They say Malibu don’t break in the winter…but if you are there on the right day…you could be smiling from ear to ear!

Like Today!!!
Another issue in February in California, at least up here in the North is rain. This year we got rain all winter but often times we get rain only in February. And every single day of Ferbruary… leads to beach closures as the sewage systems can’t keep up and the river mouths wash all kinds of stuff out to sea.
roger howzit brah miguel and i will be in the mainland end of sept early oct for the full cali surf trip hope we could hook up and surf the bu.i thought we would start there and end up in baja.aloha jimmy from anahola
Burnsie,
Don’t have an RV but you’re welcome to stay at our place as long as you like. We’re about 30 mins from Rincon and about 40 mins from LA county line with limitless breaks in between.
Burnsie,
seems like your set with plenty of places to hit in a week, but if you wind up with some spare time I’d gladly drive you to a few LA spots-Venice and El Porto are where I spend my time- nothing like the urban surf experience with the LAX outbounds passing over head and the stacks of the Chevron refinery in sight. Venice is way less ghetto and more yuppie than when I lived there, but the breakwater is still the breakwater and there’s often waves in Feb.
Wow,
Thanks 4est,Consafos and SrPato for the generous offers. Since I booked 1 more of the crew (www.longboardireland.com), have come on board and possibly another 2 may sign up if they can get a kitchen pass. At €365 (www.aerlingus.com)its a pretty cheap trip and if we get 4 crew hiring an RV should prove pretty cheap.
Its probably hard for a Californian to comprehend how special names like Malibu, Rincon and Huntington are, and like mecca, for longboarders you gotta see them once.
For me getting to check out the boards from big name shapers will be a highlight.
Any tips from a shapers perspective on what shops I should check out. Definitely want to handle some of Brom, Pavels and coopers(fish) boards
Burnsie,
You are golden as far as board shops go- California has no shortage of good equipment- Matt Moore up in Rincon, ZJ’s in Santa Monica (big shop with lots of boards), Tyler’s in El Segundo, Thalia Street in Laguna, Longboard Grotto in Leucadia, Green Room in San Diego (that’s Pavel’s shop)- this list is pretty huge. The missus hides my cash and credit cards when I go to surf shops- she says there’s too many damn boards in the house as it is.
Kimo,
See P.M.
