Hi Atom and to all others aboard Swaylocks. I am looking for some advice on a McCoy Nugget dilemma I am facing at the moment. I currently have a Nugget Thruster 6’10" x 21" x 3 1/8". I am looking to replace it with another Nugget and am wondering about a single fin version. You have been very complimentary of them on this site which got me to thinking about it. The problem I have is that I need to trade my old one (which I love) before I can afford a new one. Geoff McCoy has told me that the singles are a lot looser and less stable to surf than the thrusters. How do you find your singles? I am little wary if this is the case as one of the things I love about my current nugget is its ability to surf such a range of waves and wave sizes. I am 6’3", weigh about 220 lbs and will use the board in waves from about 3’-8’ (it doesn’t get much under about 3’ where I live - mostly around 4’-6’). Would I have to go narrower in order to keep its bigger wave ability? Any thoughts you can offer would be very much appreciated. Cheers Big Ginger
BG, If you love your present Nugget, why risk losing that board to something that youre not sure of? If I were in your shoes, I’d keep that board and find some other way to purchase another Nugget. Good luck anyway, whatever you decide to do.
I have three nuggets all singles. 6’8’‘, 7’2’’ and 8’0’’ they are loose as a goose and you cannot spin one out in the power. In fact the more hollow and powerful it gets the better the nuggets seem to go. I would not sell your original, if you do I would be interested. There is someone here who has a 6’8’’ that is single and I think he is selling it. On mesurements: Ask Geoff he will shape the board perfectly for your experience, hight and weight. Tell Geoff his Fl connection says hello. Some people try and get their shapers to do nuggets but they tried that in the early eighties with Lazor Zaps and only Geoff could make the ones that did not spin out. I would go single for sure on your next one. I have found surfing much more simple now and you don’t have to constantly pump the boards.
Big Ginger, Where are you located? I’m interested in that board, that is if you are interested in selling it and you aren’t too far away. I’m in Florida.
I have two nuggets, a 6.4 and a 7.2, both singles. The smaller one is very curvy and is great. I find it very drivey, especially backside. When you stomp on that big gull fin, it reacts nicely, no slide. The bigger one is a little more conventional in outline, noticeably less “nuggety”. The transition to these boards was interesting, I found I had to re-learn a few things and cannot surf them like a thruster. Actually the first surf was “this was a mistake!”. For me, they are more lateral than vertical, more drive than slide. Much smaller sweet spot than thrusters, if your weight is placed wrongly, they will not perfom at all. I rediscovered rails and high line trimming. For me, they work. Just don’t expect the same feeling as tri-fin.
I am in North Fl, but I go to central Fl all the time. He is right about the thruster thing, but I have found when you get them dialed in they perform better and in more variety of conditions than thrusters. I like thursters and twins as well, but I am really enjoying rail surfing on singles. The 6’8’’ is not mine to sell, but I know the guy and get it for you if he still wants to sell it.
Hi All, Thanks for all the info and advice guys - very much appreciated. I have a bit of thinking to do now. For those interested in the possible purchase of my nugget - I’m sorry but I live in Melbourne, Australia, so it may be a little out of range for most of you. Thanks for the interest anyway. Cheers Big Ginger
