I have some overall interest in a Bing Speed Square, but would not like to spend the money on one. In all honesty, I am not a good shaper, and have only made two boards to date. Sooo, I was curious, could I potentially take an existing bodyboard I have sitting in my garage (a mach 7-7), remove the slick panels, maybe rough it up, glass it, put in some fin plugs, and make something close to a speed square? I am more confident in my glassing and sanding capabilities, but am not sure what I may encounter in terms of glass adhesion, future delam problems, etc. Thanks in advance for any insight.
I don’t know, but I kinda doubt it, I think that foam is too flexy.
if you’ve shaped two boards already, a little thing like that shouldn’t be too hard, get a real blank and have at it!
Why?
mostly because I don’t have any blanks sitting around but I do have a bodyboard that sees zero use the shape is there and it approximates a board I have some interest in why not reuse something I already have before spending money and time on a blank, neither of which I have a lot of
Wrong kind of foam I think.
My buddy on Maui has a mean Polyester/PU glassed bodyboard though. Freaking speed demon.
I was anticipating that this was going to be the answer. Oh well, maybe we’ll just buy a blank and make one from there. Thanks for your time guys.
Nah fuck that, go dumpster dive and find an old soft-top or shitty longboard. Cut da fakah down and turn um into a new one!
I think it would work to some extent. As an experiment, I say go for it.
I say go for it, worth the time to experiment with it, put some thought into achieving this & it’s possible.
try to surround myself with folk who say “why not” there more fun than the “why’s” It’s all about using what you have or can get & making what you want to make!
If you learn something from it, whether it truly works or not, it’s still a win…
Slanj.
Some of the cheeper supermarket bodyboards have EPS cores. A while back I got one of these for free at a garagle sale. The skin was starting to peel and I could see the EPS beads underneath. A lightbulb went off in my mind and I decided to make a “timberflex” out of it. The skin came off faily easily by just pulling and tearing. After a little bit of sanding it was a nice white foam blank. This was my first time vacuum bagging and I royally messed it up. Shown below is a picture of it in the bag.
Why strip the board? Just go with what you have. The soft-top surfboards all use fins.
Get a pair of these and you’re good to go. You drill holes all the way through the board and the fin install connects from the bottom to the deck.

Yes you could …with right resin…then it would be a paipo , instead of just a macca tray.
