who’s the original designer of the canard quad fin set up used on the fishes like the one on the mandala site and who else is making them? i’m thinking about using that set up on my 6’4 fish. any suggestions on fin size and placement for 2-8 ft surf.anyone tried them they look like they would surf great.
probably some kneerider! right?
Hey I’d say some aeronautics engineer decided it might be a good idea to prevent turbulence, spinout, and cavitation from affecting the main tail fin on airplanes, somewhere around 1965. I’ve seen them as early as 1972, when all I did was sit at home and read, for 13 months. Argument still exists whether canard forward, aft, next to, inside of, or whatever is best. With every different shaper, a different design criteria is applied. So…of course, I don’t know!
well if we want to shift to aeronautical designers away from the first guy to do it with Surfboard fins,… then you might as well go all the way to Sailing. in any case, Will Jobson and the Twinzer , were the best I could dig up.
ask rich pavel or larry gephart >>> chicken or the egg geniuses behind splitting the twin keel into two elements to allow more flex into a relatively stiff platform. the twin keel’s long base prohibited flex in the tail until it was was divided into two separate foils–one for for drive, the other for stability. i’m just a devotee >>> http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com

Will Jobson spent the most time refining the concept with his twinzer.
Glen Winton is responsible for Quads. Then for Will Jobson for doing the Canard thing to em. Then Rusty for the C5 , which is a Canard Setup with a fifth fin. as to Toby , Steve Lis,Larry Gebhardt …they didnt innovate Quads. They were predecessors.
…Sorry boys,I been building Quads,since 1977,that beats everyone,ask Bill Fury,and Jerry Moe.Herb
…C-5 ? What’s that?..he saw a good opportunity,and drove it into the ground.Herb
ok, settle down before bubba starts rambling again. i thought we were talking about “canard quads.” rich pavel invented the CQC in the mid-80’s. the CQC, or “canard quad cut-away” is different from conventional quad set-ups in that they follow the outline of the twin keel, except split into two fin elements. as for who invented the “quad,” that’s a topic for another thread >>> aloha mr. hand http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com
howzit manolo your boards look insane.I bet they go as good as they look. what kind of fin placement would you suggest on a 6-4 to 6’6 canard quad.
…Does it really matter? No. …Just keep building ! Herb
