Canary Islands in July?

I’m planning a surf trip to the Canary Islands in July for ~10-14 days. Does anybody have advice, recommendations or web links they could help me with? There seem to be a multitude of spots there to check out.

I hear it’s the off season during July. I was hoping to find some fun playful surf- chest to head high plus stuff. I’ll be flying from Honolulu and bringing a few boards. My girlfriend has a hardcase and is planning on bringing some sticks, too.

Thanks!

hi, the canary isles in july is/nt the best time to go , the northern hemisheres winter time is the best because of the abundance of storms that track across the atlantic and push swell downwards so all of the north facing parts of the islands receive swell, that said you do get southern generated swells in the summertime but not as often, fuerteventura is probabaly my favourite island for surf, lobos islands long rights are jusy a short ferry away and swell wraps around the island abit if the swells are huge,

i think at that time of year you will just have to rely on luck,i have been in june and had good surf with not much crowds because of it being out of season, car hire is really cheap ,i use www.holidayautos.com ,best of luck ,pete

I don’t really know, but it sound like a bit of offseason for swell also, although you might be lucky with northern swells and there are fair chance of southern swells at that time. I guess it’s offseason because it’s pobably very warm at that time of year as it should otherwise be summer vacation time for most of europe. Depends what your used to though, 25C and I’m looking for shade.

Håvard

I hear it gets really windy down there in the summertime, popular with the sailboarding crew in the summertime. I guess it depends what island You go to as well.

The strong winds also bring in windswell of lower periods, try and look for a place where the swell wraps in to shelter. I usually go down there in the wintertime, even then sometimes the winds are strong but more from varying directions. summer winds are pretty much out of the NE most of the time.

Overall the Canaries is overrun with tourism but it’s mainly focussed on a few areas which You might want to avoid…

July can be pretty hit and miss. Have a look at wannasurf for a list of the spots. The banker spots are El Cotillo in Fuerteventura and Famara in Lanzarote. Both Beachies that can throw up something. But if a swell hits, there are many many spots to choose from, depending what sort of size and power you crave. If you are going to Fuerte PM me I know it pretty well. I will be there in the first 2 weeks of June.

Being from HI, you’d prefer reef breaks.

Lanzarote is the wildest island, plnety of reefbreaks like LA SANTA, EL QUEMAO.

You’ll definately need luck with swell during July in the Canaries. As your travelling from Hawaii it would cost you the same to hit the Maldives, Indo or some other southern hemi spot and be more likely to get waves. Just a thought.

Thanks all for the advice. I guess there’s more to the story. We were going to see some old friends on the coast of Spain and we have always wanted to check out the Canary Islands, since it’s nearby.

I have been absent from core surfing for about 2 years due to work, so I don’t need anything too ledgy. I wouldn’t mind sliding a few small waves on a log or a fish if there weren’t any barrels to be found.

Will there be waves in the waist to head high range at this time of the year? That would suit me fine. I just don’t wann get skunked.

As others said before, in july you’ll be lucky if you get some swell and it’s almost proof you’ll have strong winds. I hope you like windsurfing or kitesurfing…

Lanzarote has better waves, yes, but these days it’s so crowded that i prefer Fuerteventura.

I always found great rent a car prices on this site: AutoReisen , give it a try, i have more links if you don’t find what you’re looking for. Book the rent a car before you arrive there.

Good luck and enjoy.
