this is sort of off topic, but i’ll give it a shot. my buddy has a pretty beat up canoe. it has cracks and needs some repair. my idea was to re-wrap the canoe with heavy cloth, and glass just like a surfboard. but i am not sure what weight cloth, or what type or resin to use?? anyone ever work on something like this??

fiberglass
hey h20…have you surfed in strathmere? what’s a good longboarding st? i was there for the first time a few weeks ago. my first choice is 59th in o/c. but strathmere is right down the street from 59th. i like to mix it up every once in a while. i also checked out avalon, longport, and the ventnor pier. see ya in jersey
Fiberglass? Nothing a glorified ding repair won’t take care of. Build up some glass and resin, sand and paint. I literally dug one out of my neighbor’s backyard and patched it up. Some white paint took care of cosmetics. It was a blunderbuss of a canoe but it was water tight. I stuck a candle lantern in place with modeling clay and had many fine evenings paddling around Morro Bay at night with my girlfriend.
Go to a marine/boat supply store, such as West Marine, and get some boat yard polyester resin. No sense using clear sanding resin unless you have an abundant supply. The fiberglass cloth that they sell is usually 6 oz. Both are good for repairs like this.

Go a little farther to 2nd steet in Sea Isle and check that out. The water is getting a little cold for me now, 55 degrees. As far as your canoe, I had a summer job once building fiberglass canoe from molds. You build them from the outside in. Gel coat on the mold, skin coat it was about 6oz cloth and the 24oz roving. If you have holes in the canoe I would apply the patch on the inside and the fill the outside for cosmetic reasons. Whatever the problem is I am sure it can be fixed. Good luck, Frank
ok…so i should go around and patch the holes. get it nice and tight. then lay out cloth and lam. with boat resin. then what goes over the cloth as a filler coat? same resin?

If you have small holes completely through the hull, I would lay a patch on the inside, let that dry, then fill all voids on the outside with MarineTex. If the holes are large, several inches across, I would still start by putting a patch on the inside, but then layer some patches on the outside to even out the contour. Yeah, you can use the same resin as a filler coat. I have never glassed a whole bottom before, only done patches. Another layer of fiberglass, I think, will increase the weight of the canoe significantly. Is a whole extra layer necessary, or maybe just some patches? I hope I’ve helped somewhat. Good luck.
I agree with oldsurfdog… if you can do it by ding patching and painting, it will save weight and that matters - especially as you load/unload, carry, etc.
