Hey im fixing this Canyon board for a guy and am looking for a replacement fin box. It appears to be compatible with FCS. I’ve surfed my whole life and never seen anything like it. Did some online research and heard the Canyon logo has been licensed to China and these boards are being sold at WalMart?! Maybe Walmart has one. Ha! Sure doesnt look like any Canyon board i’ve ever seen. Can’t find any info on this company online. Thanks
You are right!
Never seen that job.
Local to San Diego
only help…
Yeah , saw a few of these on china boards imported int NZ around 8 years ago.
Marketed as DFS - detachable Fin Systems. I doubt you can get them. repaired a few that had fallen out or cracked.
Replace both with FCS Fusion. Will probably hide all of that.
POS Chinese fakes. Not a real Canyon. Label was stolen by a scumbag from Long Island named Tom Sena. He stole a fair number of defunct labels and had fakes made in China, all at the same factory. Natural Progression, Surfers Alliance, Canyon, Surfboards Australia, Oceanside “Spoiler”, and many more.
Hello MG-
Early morning spitballin’ ideas for making a replacement box, short of finding one NOS:
-square off a Ausfinco or Probox or Culprit box, epoxy in place and fill in any voids
-pour fiber-loaded epoxy in place around a positioned ‘dummy fin’ that is able or treated not to stick to epoxy
-make from 5 pieces of flat stock glued around a fin to make the slot and sand like crazy until it is canted and fits
-get/make the outer block and have a machinist do the slot and grub screw holes
-3D print or 3D machine (let me know if you want help with the model)
-J
Edit: Mako’s idea is better - replace both with something ‘current’ rather than overworking one replacement.
Sammy is right about the guy and his many chinese made boards with diffrent logos. et him at the Surf Expo in Orlandoa while ago can’t remember what year Told me that you can’t make Boards in The US anymore. All Board would soon be made in China. The Guy isn’t a scumbag. He’s a first class Scumbag.
Yeah, heard that name around a few times now.
Eyes seem to roll backwards when his name is mentioned.
“F” chinese surfboards!
I routered out the other knock off box and filled in the hole with some qcell and a block of foam. Im going to drop some proper FCS plugs into it and make it a quad for the owner. This board is a 6’4, any advice on where to place the quad fins. I’m hunting for measurements from the stringer.
Lame news about the board. Im in San Diego and the only Canyon’s ive seen were the old UV damaged ones shaped by Rusty. But surfing has been subject to BS from the “uninitiated” going back to the missionaries forbiding it to Keanu Reaves. Surfing can handle the Chinese, it always emerges resillient.
Rusty P shaped at Canyon from 1977 to 1981. John Holly and Mickey Fremont also shaped Canyons, as did a couple of other people. Canyon was started in 1973 as a glass shop, only. The earliest boards with that label were made in 1975
Yeah, that Canyon is a Chinese pop out. I saw them for sale at the same place I bought my Challenger pop out.
I’m curious what you mean with “pop out”.
I always believed that pop out referred to a molded surfboard (like the ACS technology from bic, or the tuflites from surftech), because of the way they are popped out of their mold.
But this board clearly is a PU/PE constructed board, not a “pop out”.
Probably made using cheap labor somewhere in Asia, but that doesn’t make it a “pop out”.
Or am I wrong?
Yes. Popout may be the wrong term in this case. My guess is they’re machine cut, scrubbed, and hand glassed. Certainly not shaped by experienced people who know anything about surfing. Many of the Chinese boards come from molds that were made off a hand shaped plug. The blanks are real close to finished shape, anyway.
While they may not be popouts in the strict sense, they are crap boards with essentially stolen logos. Total fakes.
60s popouts were made by blowing the foam with a layer of fiberglass mat placed in the top and bottom of the mold. The blank would come out with a layer of mat impregnated in the outer surface. No shaping, at all.
Hi, you’re right. Pop out probably wasn’t the best word for it. I was saying pop out, as in cheap, overseas boards.
Good job on the fix.
Nice, clean work. Too bad the board is a POS fake.
