Canyon surfboards

Just got a board in for repairs and the guy was asking about what he had…It’s a 6’0" CANYON twin fin with rounded tail, single wing and glassed on wooden fins. The only marks on the board is the number 2203 on top and rusty’s signature on the bottom, looks early 80ish in design. Any of you guy’s run across these boards in the past and have any history on them?

Try this link: http://www.surfline.com/surfaz/preisendorfer_rusty.cfm I had a Canyon and enjoyed the ride at the time. Tom S. http://www.surfline.com/surfaz/preisendorfer_rusty.cfm

i remember canyons. a couple of pros use to ride them. can’t put my finger on it but it seems like joey buran or maybe wes lane use to ride them back in their glory days. maybe it was cheyne horan. i do remember the mccoys cheyne use to ride with that crazy wing keel and the big ol wide butt tail.

there was a canyon surf shop in OB…I think they close up in the early 90’s…

Canyon surfshop was accross from the main life guard tower in O.B. which is now the Greenroom owned by Rich Pavel. I had a single fin Canyon by Rusty, it had a fin hum.

didnt know a single fin could hum. learn somethin new everyday

I had a Canyon shaped by R. back in the days. The board had a bad twist and was abit lumpy, didn’t ride very well. I think it must have been an early R. shape.

I have an old yellow wing swallow tail twin, Shaun Tomson model shaped by Rusty. Wes Laine used to ride for them back in the day. 2nd board I ever owned, it made the rounds around my group of friends, finally got it back bent to hell. But I guess it has some sentimental value. Scalped the fins off and will use them on something I do one of these days.

i owned a 5’10" canyon rusty twin around 79 /80 I was riding a single fin before that. I just remember that board being super loose.

I second that I had a twin fin Sunset Surfboard out of Encinitas that was shaped by Rusty. It had these crappy composite Fins Unlimited fins that screwed in from the top of the board. Everytime you layed into a big full blown bottom turn the fins would snap off. Great board but hell on the pocket book. -Jay

I once found at the swap meet a Canyon board (6’ 3" thruster w/ wings if I recall correctly) that was shaped by Rusty for Shaun Thompson – at least thats what was written on the stringer. I patched up the dings and rode it a few times at OB pier on a fairly big winter day and was really impressed with how it turned. I told a buddy of mine about the board, and he was ordering a board one day and told Rusty about it. He called me and said Rusty wanted to see the board, so I took it to Rusty at his factory and he was excited to see it – in fact wanted to buy it from me. He said that’s how he really first made a name for himself in shaping, by making boards for Shaun, who then won every contest in sight. He has the board now, hanging in a shop in Del Mar the last time I saw it. I traded it to him (along with $100) for a nice new 7’2" pintail that a customer had ordered and not picked up. Sorta wish I’d kept the thing, but R seemed pretty attached to it…
