car question for the east coast aussies

Got a question for you east coast aussies - do you guys have an equivilent of craigslist where you sell used cars and vans ?  Trying to figure out the economics of buying a car vs renting for an extended east coast trip.  Also, is anyone has any details on the registration process + insurance, let me know. Thanks in advance.

try http://www.carpoint.com.au/ or www.ebay.com.au

no sure with insurance though

thanks, good site.  Looks like some halfway reasonable deals, still not sure what the situation is regarding the registration, title and insurance for someone with a ca drivers license and no real address in australia.

I wouldn’t go down that path unless you’re going for an extended time. Title will just get written across to you but if the rego runs out you will be up for about $500+ as you need insurance on the vehicle + pink slip etc. Just a massive pain in the ass.

Might be worth some hassle.   Rates online I see for a one month rental (just one month - less that I was planning to go for) - $1300 for a basic car and then about $27 a day for excess reduction (about $800 per month, not easy to find that information). Works out to $2k per month.  My car in Hawaii was $800 and I gave it away when I left …

Be careful mate. This is a massive country and the last thing you want is you $1000 piece of s#!t breaking down on the pacific highway between Taree and Port Macquarie. The good thing about the rental is they will pick it and you up if something happens. If you buy a car here and it breaks down you'll be getting what is called "stupid broken down tourist tax" added to any and all repairs.

If you do find a good looking car for the right price make sure you get an NRMA inspection on before hitting the highway.

Good luck

Mate, I, Check out WICKED CAMPERS http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/

I've seen this bloody vans all over our great big country packed with back packers and tourists! They seem to be all the rage. Each van comes with a unique paintjob (And I mean UNIQUE) as well as accommodation and a kitchen built in. They rent cheaper or at least the same price as a normal rental car but have the bonus as being a small camper with kitchen. I often see them parked in the carparks of when of our many beachs here on the Sunny Coast!

They also come with unlimited KM's (miles) and you can get them one way (you don't have to return it to where you got it from). They also can be picked up all over the country.

Enjoy our great country mate, and good luck finding some waves!

Mick

those wicked campers are always parked in the carpark where i surf in Newcastle too! the things are everywhere…
