Cardboard Box Surfboard.

When will we see the pictures of Mr. Jensens clark foam box surfboard?

How is that going? Are we all going to start scrounging for cardboard…?

I can see the conversations already…“Which do you prefer…The Kenmore boxes or the Fridgedaire”

I’m sure it will be beautiful.

For those of you who weren’t in diapers when this commercial aired, North American Paper Co. did an ad where Tom Morey made a cardboard surfboard for the commercial. It was ridden at Makaha, Tom had done several for the piece, the successful model was waxed and the “end grain” of the cardboard sealed with silicone.

I’ve yet to start the cardboard board…

I do have a Clark box, and the rest of the materials…

My current project is this: I have a 14’ Hobie Cat that is being modified to be an outboard powered tri-maran…

I’ve removed all the sailing stuff, got rid of the fabric trampoline and have replaced it with a styrofoam-volan-epoxy “deck/cabin”…

Next step… Attach my 15’9" square stern fiberglass canoe to the Cat’s crossbars…

Morey wrote a really, really funny story about the making of that board and commercial in an older Surfers Journal.

May I suggest a duct tape lam on the bottom, with cutlaps for the clark box board? Cardboard and ductape would flow quite nicely, it would add a little weight I guess, and bonding to the back of the tape might be an issue… so you could actually just do the tape outside the glass

I’m gonna build a board out of Rice Krispie Treats. My kids want to help…

Hey Keith,

If you use different colors of marshmallows you can get the resin swirl look.

Rio

Here’s the plan…

using an 14’ olo plan shape

cut out about 150 rocker templates from the corrugated cardboard and seal them with acrylic sealer then glue them up 50 a bunch to form your rail bands and center stringer…

now cut up the outline from another flat sheet and coat with sealer them epoxy it to the stringers with a little glass tape…

fill the enterior with as many rice krispie bars that can fit in between all the rocker supports and sand her down smooth.

now gorilla glue on your selaed cardboard top piece and glass the whole thing in 10oz volan

take her out and ride you cardboard rice krispie cake special to the delight of the three elves hell I’d even lam the fronts of the all the boxes of rice krispies you’ll need to use over the sealed card board as a indicator of how many boxes it took to do it…

good family project…

better than milk carton canoeing…

And if you get sucked out to see you could eat it for days…

you guys seem to think this is a joke. Well, it’s not. I’m going to go post some photos of those test panels I made yesterday.

DANG! Who ate them again!!! This is ticking me off!!

That’s it, I’m switching to Rice Krispies and white glue…

interesting… in seriousness do you think you could replace foam for cardboard as a core materiel if you could glass it?

"Hicksy " made a cardboard core fin …

Dare we dig up a photo of it… was it too flexy and was it watertight?

it is one of grant’s [many] unfinished projects …hehe, true !

[ie: no base moulded on it yet ]

I’m excited to see those pics … I read this post last week and have checked back often to see if you had put the pics up of your tests. I’ve been spreading the word that someone was going to build a RiceCrispy board. When do you think you’ll get those pics.

10K

the semi-secret project continues. Snap, crackle and pop. I’ll try to get some photos. Don’t touch that dial!!!
