Hey guys, so I have been looking into some new material. Cardboard. I am thinking of making a 5’ 6"×23"×3" similar. Basically a mini simmons. I am using the website sheldrake. They have the material list and the dxf files, but they don’t have very many instructions. So hers my thinking. I am probably going to hand cut and then sand down any bumps. I have been watching some videos but they aren’t very good. I was wondering if anyone has done this, and if so, maybe shoot me some tips.
He used to have videos on his website. Research wet-out table, I think that’s the way to go for glassing. Be sure to include vent. Post pics!
will do and thanks for the tips!
Wll I did find instructions on the website that I got the files from but it would still be great if I could get some tips and tricks other than the straight forward glassing stiff. Also I forgot to add that I have made a surfboard berfore so this isnt my first time.
Not too many of those have been built. I did an open framework board some time back, but I covered it with silkspan tissue before glassing. I don’t think you could do that with a sheldrake.
You used to be able to get pre cut kits from sheldrake.
I have a fish that was destine for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Putting it together wasn’t too tricky and it looks great, to be honest I wish i’d stopped there and hung it on the wall.
Used a wet out table to glass, 3x4oz hull, 4x4oz deck to account for the cloth dipping.
Is ready for sanding, has been that way for 2 years as I was sick of the sight of it after glassing haha. Will finish it off eventually.
Yea I recently emailed him about buying a kit because I can’t find it anywhere on the website. I did watch more videos and it looks like they are brushing the resin on unlike the traditional dump all the resin out method. I guess brushing on the resin prevents it from falling through. But the only thing I’m scared about is the cardboard getting wet and falling apart.
One ding and it’s headed for the land fill… or maybe it will become a hollow board after you ding it. Use a vac pump to suck out the wet cardboard… yeah … that will work.
… you’re almost as funny as Resinhead
I’m not here to start a argument I just want some tips.
Tom Morey built a cardboard surfboard in 1966 for a TV ad by International Paper Company.
Put a shrink wrap on that sucker. Double wrap it for extra protection.
I started messing around with making a cardboard paipo. Got the rails and supports ready, then stopped, moved on to another project. It’s up in the rafters, maybe I’ll need to get back on it. My plan was to spackle the entire board once shaped and then glass it. Kinda takes away the clear cardboard look but I wasn’t concerned with that at the time.
That’s why two people have suggested wet out table for glassing.
Ray’s right, the board is a novelty and impractical as heck, but I imagine it still could be a fun project if all you wanted was a challenge and an interesting wall hanger.
Bear in mind it’s a lot heavier than you might think.
Something to prevent the cardboard getting glass soaked would be good. I guess cling-film would somewhat stop the bond…
Its been mentioned several times in this thread: wet out table. Research it.
The glass is wet out on a table, rolled up, and applied to the framework. Seems like the most viable method to glass something like that, and was recommended by the only poster in this thread who has actually built a Sheldrake. The glassing is gonna be the key to a project like this, there is no shaping to speak of.
