Cart before the horse

So I have this blank that I don’t quite know what to do with.

What happenned (long story short) is that I bought a blank from Pau Hanna Surf Supply and after a few hiccups and some patient negotiating by a good fellow named Royce, I wound up with the blank I ordered (more or less) plus an additional one to make up the difference on an accidental over charge.

Now I find myself in the position of designing a board to match the blank instead of finding a blank to match the design.

That’s OK because right now I’m more concerned with getting practice shaping than pretending I know how to design a surfboard.

The blank looks something like this based on my approximate measurements:

6’9" length

14.5" @12"  from the nose

15.5" @ 12" from the tail

22" at the widest point (approximately center)

5.5" nose rocker

3" tail rocker

3.25" thick

To me the blank looks kind of long and skinny like what I would imagine a mini gun to be.

Any suggestions?

Maybe post a pic of a board that you think might come from a blank like this?

Here are a couple of shots of the blank:

6'6" x 18 3/4" x 2 ?/? round pin or baby swallow barrel hunter. quad/thruster option. 1 - 2x's overhead and hollow. point and shoot. Fall is just around the corner, where are you located?

EDIT: that seems like a lot of tail rocker and not much nose rocker...

Howziz squalyboy, Think of it as a mind opening challenge. As ar as points go I hought I might get a teddy bear when I hit 700, nada. Aloha,Kokua

Something like that?

BTW, I’m over 900 points now and Mike still hasn’t sent me that invitation for spending an evening with Monica Bellucci…

6’8 step-up - rounded pin

Thank for the ideas guys.

Nice looking board balsa. I’d be stoked if I could get it to look even close. Is that one of yours?

Regarding rocker, i’m not sure if I measured it correctly.

I just layed it on a flat surface, bottom down, and measured how far the bottom edge came up off of that surface.

Oh yea, im in New York by the way. East end of Long Island, south shore. Close to the beach but not where the good waves are.

I spend most of my surfing time trying to surf garbage.

it’s a long way to Balsa’s shop from NY!

Approx 3000nm paddle + a 10 minute walk.

easy

Yes, this is a 6’9" mini-gun that I made for my friend Esteban’s shop.

Your method of measuring rocker is as valuable as any other, IMO. Do you know what brand is that blank? Could be interesting to check the manufacturer’s catalog and compare your measurements with theirs.

Now, the real question is: making a semi-gun out of this blank is OK but have you got the waves to go with? I don’t know anything about New York waves except I think water temperature is not really on the tropical side…

I know a few California guys who made the trip all the way from LA. Hell, I can even think of a guy from Kauai dropping by… New York is actually next door…

The blank is from BlairFoam.

I think this is the one:

What kind of waves do you think a board like this would be good for?

A gun is for big powerful waves right?

It gets big around here sometimes and when it does I usually get the crap kicked out of me.

We rarely (like once in a life time rarely) get big and hollow.

We get big and punishing or small and mushy.

Oh, and the blank is polyurethane by the way…

It can get big… but not “gun” big. A step-up/mini-gun… or what I like to call and “East Coast Gun” would be perfect for the waves you get, IMO.

Ok, it seems like the step up minigun is the way to go. Sounds like it would be perfect for bigger days here on the east coast.

I’ve been reading up and naturally the variations are limitless and often contradictory.

Seems like a good way to go regarding bottom contour is shallow v in the nose to triplane center to pannel v in the tail.

Am I over thinking this? That would be typical of me.

should I leave it flat from the nose through the middle and then v in the tail?

Also, what about fin setup? Thruster? Quad? Single?

The more I read the more confused I get.

Rocker seems to be built into the blank pretty well already.

When I look at the blank side by side with photos of other miniguns I’ve found on the internet the rocker looks pretty much the same.

I might try to raise it up in the nose just a bit to help keep me from getting creamed in steep takeoffs.

Regarding rails, soft up front getting harder but not too sharp toward the tail?

this is a Quadfather design....6'6" x 20" x 2 5/8" ...really fun and verstaile shape, round tail with quad set up like this works great....

squaly Boy Just had a look at your web site, must say I enjoyed reading it. I suggest you to take on board what you feel will work for you and your boys with the the Blank rather than copy a board photo, looking at your wood boards you have some great ideas. great work . 50 point towards your ballon drop…

No need to overthink it, just keep it simple. A nice clean round/round pin outline, 3 fins, follow the rocker that's in the blank (but flip the tail a bit). Keep the bottom simple too; flat to slight V to flat off tail flip will be fine. Reverse V with a slight double concave through fin area if you want to knock down some face bumps and add a little jump off the bottom turn.

Lots of great feedback guys. I appreciate that.

ktm,

Thanks for checking out my web sit. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Lately I’ve been getting more spam than real visitors. Its nice to see someone actually give it a read.
