So I have this blank that I don’t quite know what to do with.
What happenned (long story short) is that I bought a blank from Pau Hanna Surf Supply and after a few hiccups and some patient negotiating by a good fellow named Royce, I wound up with the blank I ordered (more or less) plus an additional one to make up the difference on an accidental over charge.
Now I find myself in the position of designing a board to match the blank instead of finding a blank to match the design.
That’s OK because right now I’m more concerned with getting practice shaping than pretending I know how to design a surfboard.
The blank looks something like this based on my approximate measurements:
6’9" length
14.5" @12" from the nose
15.5" @ 12" from the tail
22" at the widest point (approximately center)
5.5" nose rocker
3" tail rocker
3.25" thick
To me the blank looks kind of long and skinny like what I would imagine a mini gun to be.
Any suggestions?
Maybe post a pic of a board that you think might come from a blank like this?
6'6" x 18 3/4" x 2 ?/? round pin or baby swallow barrel hunter. quad/thruster option. 1 - 2x's overhead and hollow. point and shoot. Fall is just around the corner, where are you located?
EDIT: that seems like a lot of tail rocker and not much nose rocker...
Yes, this is a 6’9" mini-gun that I made for my friend Esteban’s shop.
Your method of measuring rocker is as valuable as any other, IMO. Do you know what brand is that blank? Could be interesting to check the manufacturer’s catalog and compare your measurements with theirs.
Now, the real question is: making a semi-gun out of this blank is OK but have you got the waves to go with? I don’t know anything about New York waves except I think water temperature is not really on the tropical side…
I know a few California guys who made the trip all the way from LA. Hell, I can even think of a guy from Kauai dropping by… New York is actually next door…
squaly Boy Just had a look at your web site, must say I enjoyed reading it. I suggest you to take on board what you feel will work for you and your boys with the the Blank rather than copy a board photo, looking at your wood boards you have some great ideas. great work . 50 point towards your ballon drop…
No need to overthink it, just keep it simple. A nice clean round/round pin outline, 3 fins, follow the rocker that's in the blank (but flip the tail a bit). Keep the bottom simple too; flat to slight V to flat off tail flip will be fine. Reverse V with a slight double concave through fin area if you want to knock down some face bumps and add a little jump off the bottom turn.
