Rode my buddy’s 6’2" x 2.5 thick, lopsided fish today and had a heck of a time figuring it out. the surf was 2-3’ w/ occasional 4-5’, low tide throw outs, blown out but somewhat cleaner on the sets. I tried to crank it off the bottom as I leaned into the turn it went straight. Tried again and she went to far and back over the wave. Couldn’t seem to get a flow. I’m 6’4", 225 and he is 6’4" 215. (He’s having trouble too.) Is the fish the right size? Is there a trick to riding one?

Had the same problem with one of my boards in the past. Turns out the fins were set wrong. No toe-in or cant. Whoda’ thunk? reset them and voila! Board rides great now.
Disclaimer: This was a tri-fin, not a fish.

what kind of board do you usually ride? is it a traditional outlined fish (lis style)? twin fin? double foiled no cant keels?
Hey Gary,
What do you mean by lopsided? an asymetrical fish? hmm. anyways, I had trouble learning to ride my retro fish at first because the back end would always slip out but the kind folks here at swaylocks told me that you have to ride a retro fish with bias on the front foot. Also, I notice that when the wave gets too “pitchy” in newport the flatter front rocker of the retro fish can’t keep up with fast and tooby waves. The wider tail might be the cause of it going straight in a bottom turn as well as non-toed-in fins.
It takes a few go out to get the hang of a fish. But once you get your fish dialed in you’re going to get “hooked”

This is a retro fish. Not mine, though.
you haveta have your mindset towards a fish. you can’t be thinking shortboard and you can’t think longboard. you gotta think fish. then you’ll find the flow of it.
Dude, what board do you NORMALLY ride. NOT what fish is it.
You can run more fin, bank the board while standing more forwards, or just surf it 40 more waves.
If you ride logs normally, you’d expect a period of acclimation.

6’6" twin.
daklaw and auquafiend, we gotta meet up sometime and surf.
daklaw, whats your fish like? how much you weigh? where do you usually surf?
i ride my fishes in newport around 4 or 5 days a week usually around 44-56. never had a problem with the fish getting caught in the barrel. modern rails, rockers, foils, fins, and bottoms do work much better in my experience, but even my crappy homemade reto one works ok.
i have some killer ones, two pavels and two of my own. the pavels fly like crazy, so fast.

Set it up! I 'll do my best to be there. Give me till the 1st and I should have the stingray done.
i never got used to my fish until i took it to trestles where the esier takeoffs and longer waves really lets you get a feel for where your feet and weight needs to be.
