There is about a 1:10 chance I might have a job prospect in the Morro Bay/Pismo Beach area. I’ve been weighing the question of living in an area with better wave access (five hour round trip now). I checked out Wannasurf.com and was blown away by the aggro nature of the comments - looks at least from that site like the area is ground zero for localism. I’m 47, late to surfing, still on the lower-end asymptote of the learning curve. I’m thinking that within SLO county, there must be some less hostile vibe breaks, the less primo spots that aren’t so hotly contested. I just want more time in the water, and when I read bb threads, it seems like there must be around 150 surfable days a year in CA. I’m trying to decide whether to pop for a flight and motel down there if they offer me an interview. Any comments from those who know the area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - billa

Thanks - billa i lived there from 80-88, and found it to have a real nice surf vibe, with exception of Parmy’s Army which pissed off a lot of the longtime locals.Sure, there are a couple of spots that are localized, but to surf them requires years of skill and balls-mostly out of the way reefs and such.I still frequent the area as I have friends and family there, and find the vibe to be more mellow now than in the past.I think you will find a LOT of surfers of your similar experience/age/ability around there. If my circumstances were different at the time, I never would have left there.Bummer is, is that the area is growing and becoming quite expensive-worth a check though.Good luck!
Billa - If you leave me your e-mail address I can contact you. I’ve lived in the area for 20 years and can answer at least some of your questions.
Matt and John - thank you for your responses. John, the email would be: – thanks!

Billa, I live and surf in Santa Barbara, but my family has a condo up in Cayucos which is 5 miles north of Morro Bay. I surf up there once a month or so for the last 4 years and have never had any issue or seen any signs of localism. It is one of the more mellower areas I have surfed. It is also a lot less croweded then most areas in southern Cal. I would say there are only a handful of good breaks between Moro and Cambria, but has always been a nice place to surf for me.
