Chambered Balsa

Hey Gang,

At the end of last summer I purchased an un finished Balsa Longboard. The board had a sizeable delam and no fins and was priced accordingly. I racked it for the winter, and in the spring I gave it to a friend at a surf shop to have it finished. It is a progressive shape, concave thruought the length of the board with a slightly rounded pin. It was billed as a solid board, but it was very light. The shape an the weight of the board led me to want it as a removable 2+1 setup, red ex, fcs.... whatever, I wanted it to travel easy.

So after a few months now, my friend has to feturn the board to me still unfinished. His glasser does not want to mess with puttin the fin boxes in b/c it has chambers and he dosen’t want to fool with them, not knowing their layout. He didn’t tackel the delam on the deck of the board b/c he says their is still moisture in the wood.

 So now what...

My friend at the shop, Ric, is willing to work on it in his garage with my help, but if I can get some feed back on this? The shaper had to go back to Central America, and I don’t know if he is reachable.

You can route a chambered board for boxes, even if you hit the chambers. I did one for Sam George (you still owe me for it 5 years later Sam). After the route is complete, you make a plate of balsa, wider and longer than the route, angle it down through the slot with a piece of twine 5 minute epoxied to the top of it. Apply glue to the plate and pull it back snug against the inside of the chamber roof. It should have enough thickness to go back and re-route to the needed depth, install box, where there is a will, there is a way

So make a solid plug/plate out of some balsa stock?? Two for whatever side fin atatchment and one for the fins unlimited style box… Sounds strangly easy!

Only if you find holes at the bottom of the route, the other solution, sprayible can foam in the area around the cavity, re-route, install
