Here are the 2 rocker templates all faired out and symetrical. Holding the template up to your eye and sighting down along the edge really helps to see and fix the bumps. Here is a shot of the EPS blank cut in half. John Mellor helped me hotwire the blank in half. We did it by hand and ended up with a rough cut. Luckily, the outside of the blank had clean sides so I will use those sides when gluing up the blank.
And, here are the pieces… Is it starting to look like a surfboard yet? Screwed the rocker templates in to each side of the XPS sheet making sure that they were in the same spot on either side. And here is one “stringer”. One more to go.
Decided it would be a good idea to first glue the 2 stringers together instead of trying to glue up all 4 pieces at once.
A wise man once said “you cannot have too many clamps”. He probably also said that you should not buy the cheapy ones from Harbor Freight that don’t clamp worth a darn. I missed the 2nd part… Quality 3M tape to the rescue!
After the stringers set up, I put the whole blank together and glued it up.
And, out of the clamps, here is the outline drawn on the blank. The longer lines are from the template we took the other day. I widened it to 21 1/2" in the middle. I used another template that I had from before to pull the nose in to make the board 6’ long.
This is a Pleskunas sanding block. One of the BEST things I have found for sanding EPS or XPS. I dunno if they still make them but I plan to hold on to mine until it falls apart.
