Change the entire color of the used surfboard

Hi. I got a used 6’4" midlength constructed in PU. It was almost as white as new.
However, I would like to change the color to others.
So I bought some acrylic spray for the color and UV varnish spray. Here’s my plan.

  1. Remove wax.
  2. Sand the entire board by 300 grit.
  3. Wipe the entire board by acetone.
  4. Apply acrylic spray to the board.
  5. After painting dried, sand it by 4~500. maybe?
  6. Apply varnish spray.
  7. After varnish dried, sand it by 4~500. maybe?

If the entire board is covered with acrylic paint and UV varnish, will there be no change in the performance(flexibility) or weight of the board? Please review my plan as well. Thanks in advice.

After you’ve sanded with 300, do it again with 600. The smoother it is the better the paint finish.
If you sand the final clear coat you will have a satin finish so why not get the same finish by just sanding the colour coat, maybe 800 wet sand? Save a couple of grams of weight too.

Even though you will be sanding off some of the resin, adding the colors and the clear later will add some weight. I’m not someone that worries about a little more weight, but if you do care, it will add some weight, depends on how much paint you add.
