Ok we recently did an translucent sea green resin tint on a board and the customer decided he wanted the color to be lighter and more blue. We used resin reasearch and only have the bottom laminated right now. Im sure someone else on here has had this problem. Any recomendations? We thought maybe addding a thin layer of glass with the color adjustment. We would add some light blue to the resin and test it on a piece of the cutlap that got cut off. Think it would work?
thanks ken, thats kinda what I was thinking. But If we overcomp with the white and blue a bit it should work? Maybe…still waiting to see if anyone else has tried it. Other ideas? Spray it after the hotcoat?
Yeah, definatly a possibility ken. Didnt think about that. I think we may have a few of your boards in our shop for repair. Do you glass for hot and nasty?
It never ceases to amaze me how many guys want to either fix or change the color of a new surfboard. My Swaylock friend.......once you put color on the foam....you are done, end of story, goodnight. There is no adding or subtracting. You can color the hotcoat, but you better be a dam good sander. You can paint it when your all done, but then it will look like a surftech. You can add pinlines and colored panels to hide things...but overall your done.
When I do a colored resin job for some one i always tell them that there is a bit of artistic leeway that I get. Someone tells me that they want a blue board...ok I'll give them a blue board. What kind of blue? Navy, Light, steel, sky, midnight...all Blue's. If someone want's to be specific, they better make it crystal clear to me waht specific is. I got some people that bring me the paint to spray it with, that way the color is in there ballpark.
I keep some colored glassed foam chunks around, Everytime I do a different colored board i make a little swatch. So when some one wants a red board...I pull out the red chunk, and say "red like this?"
I once had a color problem with a lamination - the lam came out with a distinct gold tone. I ended up doing another resin tint lam over it using 2oz cloth and a darker color (a blue). The board came out a little heavier but it looked good.

Like I said, You just "might" pull it off
My boards are either "Kensurf" or "Exotic Designs Surfboards"
Im definatly trying to fix it for the kid and if it goes a little different than expected he said he is cool with it, but just wants us to try. I gave him the option of adding another layer of 2 or 4 to the lam to even it out or tinting the hotcoat. The board is a higher volume fish so I told him another layer of glass wont kill it.
I THINK RESINHEAD IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY MAKES BOARDS FOR LIVING. THE REST OF YOU SHOULD WORK FOR THE GOV. THEY NEED PEOPLE TO WASTE MONEY. JUST FINISH THE THING IF THEY DONT WANT IT SHAPE ANOTHER ONE.
We ended up using one of our opaque tints and 2oz glass to adjust it and It worked really well. My partner is really good at matching colors so we have never ran into this problem before but again the issue was the person changing their mind, not our matching. The customer was stoked we worked with him and still hit his timeline so everyone wins on this one.
