channel islands single fin?

any opinions on this board?they only shape them in certain sizes(5’9",6’1",6’5",etc.).how do you go about getting the right size for you?do you go shorter than your regular board or kinda go bigger to get more of a high performance longboard feel?do you use the same concept as if you’re buying a retro fish?

I’d suggest having a chat to the shapers at CI. It really depends on what you want in terms of performance and feel.

IMHO, I don’t think it’s like a fish where you “go 2 - 6 inches shorter than your normal short board” etc. a single fin is an entirely different feel to a thruster or a twinny.

It’s all personal preference and my pref. is towards going retro on a single fin. The CI Merrick Single Fins are deffinately a goer… my brother has 2 (1 MSF and 1 MSF G2). He swears by them!

You could start by watching the video and reading the info about it on the channel islands website. Then you could surf this forum and the design forum at surfermag.com and read all the millions of words that have already been posted on this subject. Then you can make your choice and go have fun surfing!

I did a seach on the archives but couldn’t find any info on the “what size board to get” for a single fin.I watched the video but it doesn’t really help me on what size board to get considering I don’t surf like a real pro.

I guess my question is whose ridden a reto single fin and their opinions on the size they rode to what they’re used to riding.Could you have gone smaller or bigger in size?

IMO I wouldn’t go too big, especially on the MSF G1. I am 6’2 200 pounds and ride a 6’5 MSF G1. They’re shaped pretty beefy. It’s really floaty. On the hand, the glide is amazing. It’s a very smooth board to ride. My friend I surf with owns the 6’9 and said it was to much board for him and found it tougher to make turns on than my 6’5. These boards have really beefy rails. The '65 is about 2 7/8 thick. Not sure of your ability level, how you like to surf and how big you are. Factor those in, and take it from there. I just think you can go on the smaller side rather than longer. I’m now waiting on a 6’5 Mandala Bonzer fish (for East Coast hurricane season). Should be fun. Good Luck and have fun!!!

I ride a 6’2" shortboard and a 5’8" retro fish so as far as surfing style I’m down for anything.I wanna broaden my horizons.I was actually surprised when I watched the ci video of machado.I didn’t think those boards surfed like that… just by the looks of em.

OOh man am i the right person to ask. If you look at my other threads when i give huge props to this board i would and will tell you that this board is one of a kind.

This board with the single fin has super glide but given its short stature is great for turns.

I’m often amazed when I see them ridden around here that they also look nothing like what Rob Machado looks like when he rides them in the Channel Islands promotional video.

-in reply to-I’m often amazed when I see them ridden around here that they also look nothing like what Rob Machado looks like when he rides them in the Channel Islands promotional video --------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first initial thought of a retro single fin was it rides somewhat the same as a fun booard but after seeing the video I don’t know what to think.I guess thats why I’m a little confused on what size to get. Maybe I’ll go with the 6’1" to get more of a funboard feel versus the 5’9" high performance shortboard feel.

I use the same length single fin board as my other shortboards. The tail is about 3/4" more narrow, and the wide point about 3/4" wider. HTH.

thanks for help

I would say a 6"1 would be nice to have because those boards are super thick. Like 3" thick so the 5"9 would be good also.

It all depends on what you want to do and how big of surf you are intending to use the board in. the 5"9 would be good from waist up to close to double but that would be pushing it. The 6"1 would be fine for double due to its quickness in the barrell. Just a couple of thoughts.

I own a “real” 6’4" single fin from the mid 70’s. It’s made by Session Santa Cruz. Board is in excellent condition. It rides terrible and is very hard to duck dive. Doesen’t turn well ,requires that you move very forward to get speed. Need to change your riding style to make it work.Lots of foot movement. I love the look of the Retro boards. Maybe you can find one to test ride before you give all that hard earned cash to Channel Islands.

i agree with F1…go with the 6’1".

go with the 6’1. Also, you really can’t compare an old retro single to the CI single.

They are 2 different animals. Ci took the flow, glide and speed from the original

singles and modernized everything else. The rails, the bottom contours are all made to rip. The board definetly works and will stay in my small quiver until it

disintergrates. Just tell Al to go less thick in the rails on MSF G3…

Here’s my single fin. It’s awesome. Mid 70s re-glassed and sprayed by myself. I love it on bigger beach-break and quality small beach-break but it loves points too! Tea-Tree Bay at 4ft was epic and ‘Trapdoors’ a left was also unreal, come to think of it, as was Currumbin Alley.

I don’t get to surf point breaks as often as I would like too, Sydney is the ‘Beach-break city’.

I saw a the 6’1" at my local surfshop the other day and it looked huge.I can deal with the length and width but it’s definatly to thick for what I had in mind.I called C.I to get get an opinion on what size to get, and the guy was pushing towards the 5’9".I don’t think that’s enough board for me(length wise)so I’ve decided to go with a custom.I want the board to have the same paddling power and glide but perform somewhat like a high performance board. What dimensions should I get?I was thinking of getting a 5’11 or 6’0",19 3/4"-20" wide, and 2 1/2 thick board.Do those seem right for the board I’m looking for? Thanks for any advice.Steve.

How much do those boards cost off the rack versus ordering one custom?

the one in the shop cost $630.I haven’t done my custom yet so really don’t know what the price range is.probably looking around $700 when all is done.I know it sounds outrageous but I started buying C.I boards 2 years ago after going through different boards left and right.IMO they’re some of the best boards I’ve ever ridden.
