I can get 330g basalt fibre cloth here cheap. Any advice on wetting out heavy cloth and only using one layer?

The basalt will show if it’s wetted out properly by turning dark , and I don’t think you will mention a big difference to a 6 ounce / 220g cloth.
If you are concerned about keeping the amount of resin low you could use a wetout table.
