ok i used some cheap tape when i did my deck lam, now when i cut the tape off the bottom i have glue from the tape still stuck around the cut lap. both the top and bottom are glassed but now im thinking maybe i could use hot soapy water to get the glue off or maybe acetone, or would that disolve the resin also? i guess worst case would be id have to put a out of place pinline around the bottom but i really dont want that…anybody have an idea?

Ok, so you’ve laminated both sides and a cutlap on the bottom as the result of your deck lam, right? You can scrape off what you can with a razor blade, soften with acetone and wipe off what’s left and then sand where needed.
If the lam is just too gummy to sand then baste the cutlap with a coat of hotcoat and sand some more.

thanks , i really dont think i should have to sand much…as long as i can get that glue off thr rest is pretty good…are you talking about the acetone making the resin gummy or that lam resin kinda stays a little gummy in general…i just want to get that glue off but not mess up the lam, cause i was really happy with it until i saw all the glue from the tape
Cheapo tape got pretty expensive all of a sudden. Just think how cheap that expensive tape is now. Lesson learned, always use the most expensive masking tape you can find, $7.00 per roll what ever. Give the cheap .99 cent stuff to your enemies, and inlaws. If you must just hot coat and sand it out, or wipe it down with acetone, it won’t hurt the runn’in of it none.

The acetone mentioned helps. Try using some new tape to lift the glue of, as sometimes the gummy crap grips to the tape and comes off.
cool ill give all this a try sometime soon today.
I had good luck by warming up the goo with a hairdryer (carefully) and lifting it with new tape.Acetone at times will smear the residue making it worse.
Hey have, There’s a product called Goo Gone that you can get in the super market. It easily removes the residue that’s left behind by all of those pesky labels they seem to be putting on everything these days. I’ve used it several times to get rid of the adhesive from “duck tape” that was left out in the sun. Not sure what effect it will have on your lam, but you could try it on a small spot just to see what happens.
Hope this helps,
Gene
ah, the cheap tape syndrome. every so often i run short on the good stuff and have to go to ace for the cheap stuff. every time this happens i get the gooey stuff on the rail.
acetone is too virulent. lacquer thinner is perfect. wait a day for the resin to cure. then a clean white cloth and lacquer thinner. and a razor blade (single edge). the thinner makes the gooey stuff go into sticky little balls. the razor blade picks the balls of goo up. I’M NOT KIDDING. use H2O to clean up.
they sell lacquer thinner at ace, too. sort of like a plot. they don’t sell good tape. they sell cheap tape. then you have to buy thinner to clean up the mess. they sell single edge blades too. it’s…a plot…why those…DOH.
