ive got an eps/ epoxy contructed board with a buckle across the deck, i picked the board up cheap and want to resurrect it as a beater, but dont want to invest too much cash into it. is there a cheaper alternative to epoxy resin that i could use to fill the section before glassing over it that would hold up for a summers worth of surfing?
If you’re gonna be using epoxy for glassing, how much more resin would you use as filler on the deck? Add some thickening agent to the resin in you need to fill the buckle, and glass. If you had some pictures might help, but I can’t see using a large quantity of anything to fill a buckle on the deck of a beater.
exactly Huck. If its a buckle, then cut out the bad glass, slightly fill the crack, and reglass the board.
Do not over engineer this fix, only remove what needs to be removed and no more…don’t make more work for yourself. just cut out cancerous glass, fill the depression, and reglass.
The board will never break in the same spot again. I’ve done it this way no less than 150 times…maybe more. Guys always talk about sistering the stringer or adding dowels etc. Don’t do it. Just fill the crack and reglass it.
+1
Stringer ‘splints’, dowels, etc do nothing, except create more unnecessary work and use of materials.
thanks for the tips guys, the glass on the deck dug into the foam and managed to open a bit of a crevice through the middle of the buckle, but it will be repaired with epoxy and (q-cell?).
“but it will be repaired with epoxy and (q-cell?).”
Not to butt in on Jay or SammyA - Yes. that putty-like mix will be the filler to get it somewhat leveled out. After you have it leveled out, sand a few inches on either side of the cleaned up buckle and add a couple sheets of fiberglass over the filler and on to the sanded glass on either side of it using epoxy resin. If you experience a delay of more than a day, sand the cured filler too before glassing. Once the fiberglass layer has set, fill coat the repair with the same epoxy resin mixed in the same proportions as your filler putty. You can use filler putty as a fill coat instead of plain (unthickened) epoxy.
Don’t mess around with polyester resin. It’ll eat right in to EPS foam. Just get some decent surfboard grade epoxy like Resin Research or whatever brand they sell at your local surfboard material supply house.
hi you can use plaster it is water based it is cheap and you can buy it from any hardwear store yes the the same one you would use to fix a hole in your wall it doesnt heat up and is easy to sand comes in powder form you just add water to some of it mix into a paste and fill holes sand the next day depending on how deep the hole is if the hole is deeper might take a few days to dry then sand and glass over the top ive been useing this method for years never let me down hope this helps ra
