cheater coat on wooden surfboard

I’m ready to laminate my board, it’s made of andyroba plywood. due the fact i have limited amounts of epoxy resin, i was thinking of using the epoxy like a cheater coat and then laminate with polyester. is this right? any suggestions?

my understanding is that its generally not a good idea to put a poly coat over epoxy as the chemical bond is sub-optimal. Better to stick with one or the other.

You may of course get other opinions…and your mileage may vary.

jstephen, Don’t try and laminate poly over epoxy. Keith is right ,you will not get a mcchanical or physical bond. No need to do a cheater coat with epoxy. The guys who laminate over timber regularly suggest that you should laminate as the temp is dropping. The timber is breathing in so to speak, less chance of getting air bubbles forming.Platty (David Platt)

I would not use the poly to laminate over the epoxy sealer for the reasons mentioned above. If you are going to gloss the board you could use thinned down poly over the epoxy laminate after sanding. Definitely better than varnish and at least as good as most spray clearcoats, plus much easier and safer to apply. I suppose the best route is to buy more epoxy. No point in skimping on an expensive wooden board. Hope this is of some help. Patrick
