Chemical storage

Hi there folks, I’m after some advice on chemical storage if you can,

Im just setting up a new workshop and want to be on top of everything safety wise, I’ve got a separate room for shaping and glassing  and in my glassing room I want to get metal storage for my chemicals, I use both poly and epoxy and my question is how many metal cupboards do I need and what can be stored with what?

I have;

Poly resin

Mekp

Styrene

Acetone

Epoxy resin

Epoxy hardener

Additive f

Thinners

2pack paint

Advice much appreciated guys

I need to know this too, atm its all loose on the floor.

Should I pour 1/2 cans together to fill one can ?

Proper storage of polyester resin should be in a nfpa fire proof metal container. But that’s the legal mumbo jumbo. Just out it in metal container away from High heat source. Poly has a very low flash point. As for epoxy storage any ventalated area is fine no special storage needed. Also I know I saw on here somewhere poly ruined some guys freezer full of steaks and what not. The syrene is the bad stuff in poly.

Ok so epoxy is ok, my poly is in a metal cupboard, what about my other chemicals, can they be kept in the same metal box as my poly resin?

Metal cabinet with a lock on it;  marked "FLAMABLE" in large red letters usually satisfies the local Fire Dept.

Oh!  And a wall mounted fire exstinguisher(sp) nearby.

2 big questions

  1. are you looking into storage to appease local governments? Or is this in your private workshop that wont be subject to inspections?

  1. What quantity of chemicals? Pints gallons. Drums.

I guess at some point in the near future I may need to appease local authorities, it’s more than a hobby and I want to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s so to speak.

I try to take my health very seriously and whilst I’m going through the process of setting up a new workshop I’d like to do it right first time.

I kind of remember reading how bad mekp is and how it can spontaneously combust or something, surely this can’t be stored next to something which would help it react?

Im not talking vast quantities maybe 10 litre resin, half litre styrene etc but I would have thought we should be dealing with the same type of control measures regardless of quantity.

You live in the UK?  No worries.   We only have to sweat that $#!t here in Obama- land.  Der Fueher and the "Brown Shirts" are watching our stuff over here.
