Cheyne, talked to Noel about making a CD of the large resolution images to send to you guys. Don’t worry about downloading (mouse right click on the image and choose “Save Image” and save them somewhere).
Some thruster pics from the M-Fiberglass (Japan) website:
hey Dorian…u scambled your letters…yeah…thanks 4 tellen me to check this out…the waimea stuff and the pics I ve saved…brought back moments that felt like pushing walls of the limits.and good for my grand kids i guess…gotta go
thanks roll …that is the board I won the World Masters Title on…sea how old it looks…i keep my boards for 5-10years…my hawaii boards are older…that board was magic…I still have that 1…guys are trying to go retro…ride old style boards…I think if they take the good from the old and blend it with the good from the new…they will have a all round better board
that bottom snap…give mixed memories…I lost the world title the day before…went to a IPS meeting and there was so much bickering goin on between us the surfers and the contest directors…i just got up and said i gotta go…went down to rocky point and that snap was one of the fastest snaps ive ever done…still remember that moment clear as a bell today…the whole situation…felt trapped and robbed at the same time…trying to get away from it…i think the next year i took all stickers off my board and went anty…put stickers back on heavily when i met a guy in Barbados who said can I have some stickers to make my board look better…then i thought ye they do dont they…gave him a stack…and he gave me a stack…aloha…keep em rollin
Hey Cheyne, Dorian here, Remember that time you let me try a board that had razor sharp edges ? Maybe that one from the HB contest you won that year. I could’nt even surf on it. That thing was so sharp and sensitive and grabby. You ripped on that board. Was that the same board as the contest one ?? Also Batch says he has your wetsuit (the pink and white one ) thats in the cover shot. I told him to sell on EBay, He said never… LOL
What kind of bottom rocker did Jeff put on your boards back then ? Flatter or constant curve ? and what does he put in there now ?? Also are you using Channels, or flat, or Vee. Did you ever let Preston ride one of your boards ? what did he think ? Later DR
What a killer thread and especially the pics. Man does that bring back some memories. I live in Newport Beach, CA and used to see you out at 54th and the point every summer. After getting noodle arm I used to sit on the beach with my friends and watch you. Man I'm old that was when I was 15 or so. I just went to my storage and got a bunch of mags out that I have kept from back in the 80's, classic stuff. If I could figure out how scan and download some I will. Anyway, nice thread, thanks for bringing back the memories. Keep them coming.
Cheyne, do you ever go to sydney much…D.Y. in particular ? [because, isn’t Peter’s son [Justin ? Darren ?] also a water photgrapher ?
My brother Simon focussed on little avalon, while Peter focussed on HIS local reef, D.Y. point.
So, imagine Simon’s amazement / shock when Peter pulled the all-time photo spread , in ‘Surfer’ [!] , of Rabbit and others at yep…you guessed it ! ‘little av’… ah the irony of it all…Simon was away that day elsewhere !! [ It was the famous M.R. 'sex and tube rides ’ issue]
ben
GREAT shot, Rob…thanks for posting that ! …the late great Peter Crawford was certainly one of the masters of the deep tube shot !
i remembered you mentioning this thread rob so i figured id look for it.
pretty sick pics. even cooler how you have the man himself explaining every short and every board to you as well.
one day im gonna make myself one of those old mccoy nugget shapes. saw a star fin today, seems as if they are coming back into production now. seen it in 2 different shops. some sort of molded fin, not fiberglass.
maybe they will return now that fcs has ripped it off for the thruster set.
Cheyne , do you remember this board ? [from the Surfing World vol 27 no.1 “on the road again” issue (bells , burleigh, duranbah) which had Dane on the cover]
