I have a 10’ big yellow longboard, and want to cut it down a little for some fun:)
I want to cut off a foot from the nose. The board barely has any rocker, so was thinking losing a foot from the nose wouldn’t mess it up too much.
My goal is to cut off a foot, leave the top glass intact and after the cut remove about 1-2 feet of glass on the bottom so I can shave some foam off the bottom at the tip.
My question is how much should I overlap the new glass on the old glass?
I have done basic ding repair, nothing structural. I did my best to google it but wasn’t sure about the fiberglass overlap question.
Any tips are greatly appreciated. Would eventually like to shape my own board, figure this is a good start.
To answer your question, a two inch overlap should be fine at the nose area, (wider at the middle, and tail). To offer some advice; cutting off the nose is usually a bad idea. If you are in Socal, I will offer you two blanks for your board, Personal Message me if interested. AND, WELCOME to SWAYLOCKS!
Cutting the nose off a board with barely any rocker leaves a board with even less than barely any rocker. Stripping and re-shaping an old board makes sense in certain curcumstances, but doing it to a perfectly good board for “fun” or as a “start” for shaping is questionable.
Why not pick up a surfboard blank, maybe you could get a second, with some small defect, for cheaper.
There are lots of threads, and loads of info here, on making surfboards. If you can post pics you can get a lot of comments and insights to help you on your way. Sometimes you’ll even find there are other swaylocks members in your neighborhood, willing to give some hands-on guidance or advice.
Making your own boards is a very rewarding use of your time and resources.
Thanks for the advice. After putting in all the work I wouldn’t want the nose to break off while pushing through a wave because I didnt do enough overlap.
I live in Oahu. One of the main reasons I was looking to give it a nosejob, is there are lots of dings on the nose and tail of the board. There are small cracks in the front of the finbox and some water damage in the rear right rail. I was thinking about trying to sand down all the dings on the tail, and recoating with some resin , and fixing the nose in a similar manner. Right now the board is a bright yellow, and was thinking about blending in blue on the tail to cover up the repairs. Any other recommendations on color, since I dont think I can match the yellow?
I guess I am trying to make it into a new board. I figure it is cheaper to do all the repairs then sell it cheap and spend more on a board.
Once again,thanks for the advice.
By the way was thinking of doing a short slab like a fish or mini-Simmons for the first board.
Will post the results once I get started. Definitely a ridiculous amount of info on this forum.
If your goal is to sell the board then just get the board water tight. You can go back and do the blue cover up, or purple if you like the Lakers, to hide the dings like you’re talking about. Doing a pigmented resin coat and making it come out nice isn’t super easy though if you’re not familiar with it. Come on in to the shop and we can help you out or email us and we can walk you through it.
Thanks FH, like the yellow and blue idea. I have been to both your stores, one of the guys in Wahiawa really helped me out with getting started to repair some dings.
