Chris Bystrom RIP

I was saddened to hear of Chris’s demise. Died instantly along a nasty stretch of Aussie Coast Hwy…at least it was instantaneous…no suffering.

That’s not much consolation when you are a stoked surfer, talented filmmaker and proud parent.

Chris will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances.

that was a few years ago. Sad loss.

Roo…a friend asked me about this…told him I hadn’t heard…then he sent me an article but it didn’t have a date…doesn’t much matter anyway, it still stings when you lose someone full of living life and the cup is suddenly emptied.

I’ve been to the ‘other side’, or more correctly, where your thoughts come from-

…they don’t call me DeadShaper for nothing.

pretty sure it was 2001 or 2002, If you google it there are conflicting dates. i remember when it happened.I think it was Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving…retro to the end…at the time I had a job a few blocks away from his cooly shop, Retro groove. It was a cool place to browse through all the old surf stuff, posters and records(vinyl)…it still is, i went past there only a week ago and if a parking spot had appeared i would have gone for a look, but the street was pretty busy…so i went for a paddle at kirra instead.

Cheerr Roo.

Knowing where Chris lived I can be half-sure I know the very stretch of Highway…It makes me cringe. A grommethood legend.

SN…you stand a much better chance of living longer if you confine yourself to divided highways…but we all can’t be so picky or live in such a controlled environment…my personal preference would be to ride a donkey down to my favorite beach with the worse to happen getting blindsided by a mo ped. Hopefully it involve a terrific looking French Polynesian girl that would offer me dinner as consolation…you fill in the rest!

just a personal recollection… I used to buy used LP’s (yes, vinyl records) from Chris back in the late 70’s in San Diego… he used to pull around a little red wagon (like a kid’s toy) full of cool music and sell it on the sidewalk - made money for his travels and to buy film for his surf movies…his LPs were a buck or two each. First time I ever heard of Midnight Oil…

KM…what a character this guy must’ve been!

I still have a bunch of ‘vinyl’ er, records but I don’t ave a record player anymore…remember “Daddy Cool”?

Ross Wilson (lead singer) of Daddy Cool is still playing around the traps.

Saw him performing “Eagle rock” at a music festival last year.

I did not know Chris was gone either. R.I.P.

Watched Blazing Boards a couple weeks ago, classic Bystrom.

i knew chris vary well i sold surfboards at the leucadia flea market in 1977 as well my dads art work there… me and chris were good friends as well i would fix his boards for records too…his dream was to save up all his money and move to aus… if im right it happend 5 years ago i can.t rember when i got the call… but still to this day it lives a bad taste in my mouth it least he was doing what he loved as …well liveing his dream too…quig

Hey Cuttly

Daddy Cool reformed as support for the Beach Boys tour a few months back.

I heard as usual they stole the show.

Cheers
