Clear coating paint job on foam

Ive been looking through the archives reading about using acrylic spray paint on foam and I hear mention of using a clear coat to seal the paint to prevent running. I was under the impression that the absorption of resin into the foam was a major part of the laminating process. How will a layer of paint and then a sealer on top of that affect the lamination? Just how important is it for the glass and resin to have contact with bare foam?

Rob,

I do not know a direct answer to your question. I think there is a thread in the archives on sealing. I paint most of my boards with acrylic and have never sealed one or had the paint bleed. I don’t know if it’s needed. Maybe under special circumstances. A artist painted a board I shaped for him. A wild design. No sealer coat. Looked bitchen.

think of it this way, if the paint has good adhesion to the foam, and the resin adheres to the paint, you’ve got good overall bond. you can have a problem with paint if it’s applied to thick which can cause crystallization (sp?). don’t sweat it. paint it and glass it, usually no problem. the stuff about sealer coats was probably in reference to two color paint jobs with a tape edge between 'em.
