Cloth

Just wondering what brand cloth everyone likes.  I’ve been using warplite and I’m pleased, but I’m curious to see what brands other people prefer.

haaaa’’ why is it i am allways the target

but i am sure it was satin weave volan                by the way there is a difference between a surfboard manufacturer and a     surfboard  maker

sarcasim sucks’’

I'm starting to lose touch with the world of hand-lamination, but the Aerialite products are designed for the surf industry, lots of good glassers I know like them, and they give away beer at the trade shows. (Not to mention advertising on sways). What more could you ask for?

As I understand it, the whiteners in Aerialite make it good only for clear lams.  Any color tends to get muddy.  Confirm?

I like to glass with color, though I'm really unhappy with the latest jar of red I got, which left my latest shooter all blotchy on the bottom.  Yes I can glass with an even hand; this stuff seems to have faded unevenly and left some yoouuuug-ly blotches where the straps from my racks cross the board.  I know the lam was okay when I did it.  The fading happened later.  The board's only been used since November '08, and not that much, either.

Well I still am using my roll of Hexcell 6 oz silane E glass. It's just fine for me.  YMMV

great white is the best

…hello Honolulu,

no muddyness with Aerialite

no matter the color used

Aerialite is the best so far but some models are a bit pricy

great white is the next in quality

then Hexcel, except the W-glass

then, the others

Haha nice Mike!  Glad to see our priorities are aligned the same.

Has anyone used that high strength Aerialite cloth?  Looks interesting.  Is it worth the extra coin?  Soak up more/less resin?  Tighter weave?

It's been my experience that the whiteners in Aeriatite have a tendency to show up over color on sand throughs and shatters. Hard to hide the shatters.

I've had people ask me if my board was sprayed white because it was so white after glassing, so the whiteners definitely have that effect!

hello Surfthis,

I glass boards in several conditions and type of rooms

I use a lot intense colors like Purple, Reds, Violets, Orange, etc

in around 25 years glassing, I used several brands and the one that really showed everything was the W-glass by Hexcel and some S-2glass

even in clear laminations

Aerialite dont show anything even with humidity in it

-the pict board was laminated with BGF Aerialite 4oz and gloss/speedfinish combo

I’m about to buy a roll of 4oz glass for PUPE UV laminating. Current roll is Hexcell but may give JPS Warp glass a try this time. What are your opinions JPS vs Hexcell and if any downsides/ drawbacks/ things to watch out for/ when laminating warp glass?

Lots of stuff to consider when choosing a cloth, yarn size, twist, or flat, warp count, fill count, weave, E or S,and finish.  That is the basics.  To answer your question Bud, the JPS lays down easier on the rails, and does not spring back as much as the Hexcell.  Most of the manufacturers fabrics for surfboards work pretty well, and for most guys on here it really does not matter.  Did use a bit of crap from China recently that was free, but it wanted to bunch up and not lay down evenly, ended up spending way too much time making it even, and in laminating you only get one chance.

Howzit bud, I liked JPS over Hexcell for the reasons that ghettorat mentioned but some glassers prefer Hexcel. I think the thing to do is try them all and decie which one you like, There used to be another brand that my brain an't remember thename but Hexcell bought them and that was the end of that glass and it was pretty good glass but not like JPS, but that is just my prefrence. Aloha,Kokua

Kokua is right in that some board-builders prefer HEXCELL, because it seems to make sense that the stiffness and memory of the cloth makes it feel stronger, so it stands to reason that will make a stronger product.  JPS is the production guys wet dream…

Both types work very well.

Bud,

My Hexcel rolls are a wee bit stiff when it comes time to glassing. I think the Hexcel might be a tad stronger in 4 or 6 oz, but it takes more work to have it lay down nice. it works great for epoxy, because epoxy is so much more sticky that poly.   I think JPS makes a cosmetically better board.

Thanks for the expert feedback from all you guys, really appreciate it. I’ve just about used up this roll of Hexcel so sounds like shouldn’t be too different with JPS.

I was hoping also for insight on warp glass, described here http://www.fiberglasshawaii.com/fabrics/fabrics-cloth/fabrics-cloth8.html not much maybe a little price difference

Warp glass is nice, and take one guess who helped on the development of it along with Graphite Masters, Hank Johns…  Should have asked for and received royalties…

I’m not a pro but have used a fair amount of both Hexcel and the JPS, the Hexcel has a bit stiffer feel but not at all unworkable, while the JPS drapes a little easier - if you are doing a lot of wings and fancy tail shapes you might well prefer the JPS, but I find I can switch back and forth without any stress.  The warp glass just has a few more fibers in the long direction and is not much different to work with either.  I haven’t measured but JPS seems like it tends to hold a tad more resin than Hexcel, all else being equal (slightly more open weave).  But you’re good with a squeegee so no worries!

well you might like satin weave in hexcel?

yup, I might, aren’t the satin weaves more expensive?  I like trying different things.  Recently bought a roll of JPS 30" wide 4.5 oz glass, style 7510 with S912 finish, got a great deal on it…   Will keep a lookout for the hexcel in satin weave too, what do you prefer 4 harness or 8 harness?

thanks Huie

Howzit Keith, One of the last rolls of JPS I bought was like over 250 yards which was bigger than the rolls I had been getting from FH,usual roll was about 160 yards. So I calle FH and asked why the roll was so big and they told me it was made in Korea, so I guess if you get a roll over 200 yards or so that is where it came from. The best part was they dropped the price from $2.20 a yard to $1.85 a yard, makes a difference when you multiply 35 cents by 250 and FH was always been very good to me. Aloha,Kokua
