Hey huie, the last thing I want to do is hurt your brain lol. That 5’10’’ x 18 1/2’’ thruster was under 2 kilos naked (4.25 lbs to be exact).

Kirk Brasington gets credit for this big leap in fiber-to-resin ratios and process shift.

Thunderstorms roll off the Atlantic. Torrents of rain and flashes of lighting have kept the meek hiding under their beds. But you are not meek and have ventured out. Now your car is up to it's axles in mud your cell phone is useless. As far as you can tell you are miles from the nearest tiny bit of civilization. A giant bolt of lightening illuminates a Castle like structure. Did you really see that? A Castle deep in a Florida swamp?  Disney is at least 50 miles away! Another bolt and there it is again. You are sure it's a Castle! How did did get there? You trudge through the mud and rain. As you get closer an odd feeling over comes you.   There is something else moving out there. Is something or someone watching me. At the gate you notice a sign KEEP OUT! NO TRESPASSING!  Surly you think to yourself, They would offer a stranger the use of their phone. A warm place to wait for the tow truck. Maybe a cup of soup or hot tea? You see a window with some light. It might be a good idea to peek inside see whats going on and determine if this is a place to ask for help. You hoist yourself up and look into a strange laboratory of some sort Something is covered up under a cloth. It looks like it might be a Surfboard? What is this place. You have been in Surf Factories and board shops but this, this is just strange looking. electrodes and and wires everywhere a strange looking very large glass beaker filled with a boiling concoction. You see a man wearing a lab coat he is attaching something to the board the other end is in the glass Becker.  he turns  to pull down a large switch. from the dark recesses of a corner you notice movement , is someone else there? From the shadows you hear this other man shout. 'kirk NO" The man in the lab coat turns. "Quiet Micheal, go back to you bay and prepare the the 5'8" . "But Kirk I beg you the world isn't ready." The man in the lab coat the one named Kirk laughs a maniacal Laugh and and tells Micheal. "You will be a witness to history never in human history has mankind had something like this. " " I'm telling you Kirk" humans are not ready!. They will use it for evil." We made a promise to the others." Kirk again reaches for the switch. " The Aliens will understand Micheal I tell You They will understand!, It is then that you slip hitting your head on the window. the glass shatters and You are now bleeding Kirk and Micheal stare at you wet cold and now bleeding. Just before you pass out .You get out" Hi guys sorry to interrupt, but could I, and you feel yourself sinking into the black void.

The Coil report to be continued......

Mike,

guy’s ready to make boards over 7’0 yet?

cheers

Haha, I didn't shoot many pics. There'll be more coming.

Wouldn't want to rattle all the cages in status-quo land all at once. You, on the other hand, get it.

I unstand the “why” of this thread, but not the “what the flock for”…

how are you brother’’

haa; i started this a year ago where ya been

hope your well

Did anyone else hear the same sound when they saw the latest pics?

I didn’t know you could hear dumbfoundedness.  But when you have a couple thousand people simultaneously going “what the . . .?”, spilling their coffee, staring blankly, feeling completely and utterly left behind, in the dark, well . . . I heard it.

Is it not enough to beat the rest of the world by a couple of touchdowns?  Do you really have to go all Steve Spurrier on us and run up the scoreboard?

I’m selling my tools and moving to Iowa.

Thanks a lot, Mike.

The bigger question to me is how can SO many surfers not even realize this is a viable option.

I don’t know how many threads I’ve seen where “how can I get a more durable board” end up with answers ranging from using a denser blank to using 6/4/4 instead of 4/4/4 glass. Really? That’s the best you can do.

You mention epoxy/vacuum bagging and just get blank stares. There’s a handful of guys that are SO far ahead of the curve on this stuff you wonder when the rest of the surf world is going to catch up (I’m looking at you S. California)

Much resepect to the guys at Coil for always pushing forward and refining and improving their process.

Hey guys, thanks for the props and sort of props (artz and newschoolblue made me laugh).

lawless, it’s more about strength-to-weight than it is durability. As you point out, you can get a more durable PU board if you make it very heavy and stiff. The PU shortboards that ride good have very minimal e-glass and as such are disposable. When you have a better s/w ratio, there are places in the scale of weights and strengths that others can’t go.

I tip my hat to Coil’s progressive innovation.

However, what can be done commercially cannot always be done cost effectively in one’s garage or backyard.

Yeah, you guys are hitting all the marks. Better performing, lighter and stronger (more durable). But it’s easy to add weight/strength if you need to if performance dictates it, so you have a lot more options available to tune the board as needed to fit the requirements.

Always great to see what you guys are up too.

I’m just dumbfounded why bagging lams hasn’t caught on in surfing. Every other composites field uses it and has for a long time. It’s proven and the results speak for themselves. It actually saves labor/materials when done right. I could go on and on, but I’m preaching to the choir in this thread.

Keep on keeping on. Just post more pics

From what I’ve read regarding bagged boards.

It’s the feel that is different from the old PUPE that people don’t like.

Obviously Coil and a handful of others have got it wired.

Ahead of the curve for sure.

Kick at night.

Because people want more pictures.

Mike,

The mesh looks a lot like knotless nylon drag seine fish netting. I saw something really similar on fishnetco.com website. Page 35 of their PDF Complete Catalog http://www.fishnetco.com/NOV%202012.pdf Am I close?

Haha, you're ''fishing'' for info and nothing's biting here. You guys know we aren't going to talk about that.

You have your own R&D program, enjoy the quest.

I just got some nylon 6,6 woven. So many fibers, so little time!

Whatever it is, looks very cool!!
