Colors for first mexican blanket

What are opinions for colors for a first mexican blanket? I have black, white, royal blue, light blue, tourquise, green, red, orange, yellow tint, purple tint, magenta tint, and pearl. I have supplies to do about seven colors right now but was thinking maybe scaling it back would be better to keep it from mudding up. Opinions on color variations would be great. Thanks.

the only real way to learn it is to do it.  Number of colors not so much of an issue other than from a time management perspective… you might want to keep similar colors together on your first one, since you’re likely to smear them around a bit.  Try to pull from the stringer to the rails nice and steady; wipe your squeegee often, and use enough resin that you don’t have to work it too much.  Have fun!

I haven’t used tint or pigments yet but I do a lot of painting and the colour theory would still be the same I’d imagine.

Just be careful when swirling together complementing colours, that is, colours on the other side of the colour wheel. As a rule you mix a complement to tone down a colour (take colour away) and the more complement you add the less colour you end up with, in other words you end up with a muddy or grey colour.

So, as Kieth said, use colous that sit close to each other on the same side of colour wheel and you will end up with a mix of nice colours rather than a muddy mess. You can use just 3 colours and end up with say 6 or more ‘clean’ colours in the end

No black on the first try.....

If you want to check out someone who really knows what they’re doing (not that I’m saying that you don’t) doing a Mexian blanket, check out this video on Youtube. I found it just the other day when I was pretending to work.

…cue computer literate Swaylockers who can embed the video in a post.

For first go I would recommend keep the number of colours down to simplify things (i did 4 on my first go and that was enough to get me sweating!). If I was going to take anything away from my first it would be to mix up more than enough resin as keith highlighted earlier. The need to rework resin coming off the laps is what caused mine to muddy in places.

Watch the videos, take your time preping everything, if you can have an assistant there to help pass you resin etc.

Good luck

As stated..no black...

period.

don't be seduced impulsivley.

A bit Heck-tick  however I like the of pouring of clear at the end.

Kind regards,

All of them! My first went from black to White with another 7 colours in between. Used poly resin, catalysed in the middle of the range and the trick was apply one colour at a time and pull with a narrow squeegee. Use a bit of clear to keep the colours separated.

I did a total of eight colors today (yellow, lime green, magenta, purple, red, royal blue, white, and pearl purple). I did a lengthwise pattern, then the mexi blanket pattern, you can see it as a layered pattern. I apologize in advance for the lousy pics, they honesty don’t do it justice. It came out way better than I could have imagined.

A couple more photos. I cut the laps but didn’t have time to sand and do the other side, should have the lam done sometime this weekend weather permitting.
