Have been reading here for quite a long time and really like what s going on here. So as this is my first post here I wanted to say hello first. I'm 23 year old and from Germany. 2 years ago I started building surfboards and am now starting to build my 4th. It'll be my second compsand. It's supposed to be a 6'6" round tail quad using the McKee Multisystem with the TC 4+1 fins. I want to use it in waves up to OH which aren't too hollow.
It would be great if some of you guys could give me some advice on my shape or fin positioning perhaps because I can't really tell wether my shape is good or not.
so here we go:
(Please ignore the rails. these are the standard aps3000 ones)
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of me surfing. There should exist some, but I can't find them. I'm 1,93 m tall and weigh around 82 kg. My feet are size US12 or 45-46EUR. I'll cut my blank from EPS block foam as I've donebeforefor my 3 other boards.
I've been surfing in Scheveningen quite a few times but the board isn't really intended to be surfed there. It's rather for my trips to the atlantic coast. Especially righthand Pointbreaks in Portugal like headhigh Ribeira d'Ilhas.
i would put square tail on it instead of round, to get a bit of drive back
+
and if you use the rocker print of this program, make sure the curvature lines for nose and tail match, zoom in to see if they touch or not....
btw, i am making st similar for bigger dutch winter waves, ill post pics, super similar to your shape!! my weight is 78 kg w/o wettie, footsize 43, 1m89 board is going to be 6'7 * 19.5 * 2.xx also round tail, and wider nose, like yours [looks good!]
what do you think about the fins? Do you think the McKee multi setup will work in it? I haven't really ridden a quad yet but from what everyone is saying it seems to be just what i want. so to compare it to a thruster i thougt about the 5-fin set up.
By the way: has anyone of you ever tried the fcs aqualine fins?
what exactly do you mean? I'm always grateful for some suggestions or tips when it comes to my desigbn ideas, because i haven't shaped a lot of boards and can only guess about what works or not.
possibly silly refers to the rocker, like i mentioned too.
make the curvature fit
you can see the curves be apart in the middle, plus the nose curvature line looks weird [bends up and then down, from l to r…]
what is the thickness and the rocker numbers? can you attach the file to this post? then i could do tweaks …
for the mckee, i guess they are for serious waves only, headhigh not serious enough, your board will likely bog /slowdown a fair bit, depending on what fins you stick in. 4 fins is stickier than 3, plus 3 will turn sharper on small waves, id go for the 5-fin option. Use 4wfs, that way you can pull the fins closer together for a looser feel, and even closer to the rail as i heard dean geraghty state, dont see those boxes on his site yet though…insstall the hd foam [you can buy those along] once board is finish shaped…
also, is the bottom flat, concave? id go for concave bottom, easy to make with a compsand, once a vee shows up it becomes a bitch to shape. compsands are bitches anyways…
what balsa and fibreglass will you use, what schedule?
I wanted to use the 5-fin set up so i could change between quad and thruster. i thougt that the mckee multi system is just about that.to keep it simple i just wanted to add a slight single concave.
I'm not quite sure about the glassing. I'll use corecell as sandwich core and probably 6oz. e-glass on the outer lam. not quite sure about my inner lam. rails will probably also be made out of corecell.#
